Overview
EN ISO 1172:2023 specifies standardized calcination methods for determining the textile‑glass and mineral‑filler content in textile‑glass‑reinforced plastics. Published by CEN/ISO, it covers two methods:
- Method A - determination of textile‑glass content when no mineral fillers are present.
- Method B - determination of both textile‑glass and mineral‑filler content when both are present.
This applies to prepregs, SMC/BMC/DMC moulding compounds, textile‑glass‑reinforced thermoplastics and granules, and filled/unfilled laminates made with thermosetting or thermoplastic resins. The standard excludes composites with non‑textile glass reinforcements, materials that do not fully combust at the test temperature (e.g., silicone‑based resins), or fillers that degrade below the minimum calcination temperature.
Key topics and requirements
- Principle: weigh a test specimen, calcinate at the specified temperature, reweigh to determine non‑combustible residue (glass + filler).
- Method A: direct calculation of glass content from mass loss when no mineral fillers are present.
- Method B: after calcination, separate glass from mineral filler by dissolving the filler in hydrochloric acid and reweighing to quantify glass and filler individually.
- Sampling and repeatability: testing on parallel specimens (minimum two, add third if results differ by >5 %) and reporting the average.
- Constant mass requirement: repeated calcination/drying cycles until mass stabilizes for accurate results.
- Limitations: methods are not suitable for composites with degradable fillers or incompletely combustible resins.
- Safety: procedures involve high temperatures and concentrated acids - appropriate health and safety measures are required.
Practical applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing of prepregs, moulding compounds (SMC/BMC/DMC), and glass‑reinforced laminates.
- Verifying material composition for production batches and incoming raw materials.
- Supporting material data sheets and supplier declarations with quantified glass and filler contents.
- Research & development and failure analysis where accurate constituent quantification is needed.
Who should use EN ISO 1172:2023
- Composite manufacturers and processors
- Materials testing laboratories and quality assurance teams
- Product engineers and materials scientists working with glass‑reinforced plastics
- Regulatory and certification bodies that require standardized compositional data

meet health and safety requirements. The test methods described require the use of high
temperatures and concentrated acids. It is the responsibility of the user of this document to
follow the appropriate health and safety procedures.
1 Scope
This document specifies two calcination methods for the determination of the textile glass and mineral
filler content of glass-reinforced plastics:
— Method A: for the determination of the textile glass content when no mineral fillers are present.

are present.
This document is applicable to the following types of material:
— prepregs made from yarns, rovings, tapes or fabrics;
— SMC, BMC and DMC moulding compounds;
