SIST EN 13677-2:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 13677-2:2003 for reinforced thermoplastic moulding compounds specified as GMT. It covers the general requirements, sampling, plaque preparation and test methods used to verify glass mat reinforced polypropylene composite sheet for manufacturers, suppliers, customers and test laboratories.
What does SIST EN 13677-2:2003 specify?
SIST EN 13677-2:2003 specifies the general requirements for all types of glass mat reinforced polypropylene composite sheet (GMT) within the scope of the series. It also gives the procedures for preparing moulded test plaques and cutting test specimens, so that mechanical properties can be measured in a consistent way.
The standard is organized into clauses on scope, references, terms, general requirements, sampling, plaque preparation and a list of properties. It is followed by normative annexes A to H and one informative annex I.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| A | Warpage of blanks |
| B | Rectangularity of blanks |
| C | Material temperature of GMT blanks before moulding test plaques |
| D | Blank weight and blank dimensions |
| E | Shrinkage after processing |
| F | Thermal processing stability |
| G | Flow induced anisotropy |
| H | Heating oven parameters for blanks used for test plaques |
| I | Definition of GMT production direction |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 13677-2:2003?
SIST EN 13677-2:2003 sets practical requirements for supplied GMT blanks, lot sampling, moulding conditions, and the property list that must or may be specified. In practice, this means the standard is used both for release testing and for resolving disputes between customer and supplier.
General requirements and handling
Clause 4 requires the glass fibre reinforcement to be thoroughly impregnated with the polypropylene matrix, with no visible unimpregnated fibre bundles on the surface of an “as supplied” blank after heating to the moulding temperature. The standard also requires packed pallets suitable for forklift handling and road transport, and labels that identify the designation code, product type, production lot, pallet number, dimensions, and pallet weights.
Sampling and conformity
Clause 5 states that the manufacturer measures the properties of GMT once for each lot and documents them in a certificate of conformity. The certificate has to follow EN 10204, and additional tests may be included when agreed between customer and supplier. For quality issues, the standard gives defined sampling plans for blank dimensions and weight, fibre content and density, and mechanical re-testing from test plaques.
Preparing test plaques and specimens
Clause 6 describes how to make the moulded plaques used for mechanical testing. The plaque is prepared by compression flow moulding, with defined plaque thickness, blank stacking, blank temperature, mould temperature, pressure, timing and cooling. This matters because the measured properties depend strongly on moulding history, so the standard fixes the process before testing begins.
Clause 6.2 also controls where specimens are cut from the plaque and how they are machined. The centre region is used because the corners can show fibre orientation effects, and cutting methods such as CNC milling, sawing, or pre-cutting followed by milling are allowed if edge damage is controlled.
Property list and test methods
Clause 7 divides properties into those that shall be specified and those that may be specified by agreement. The required group includes blank dimensions and weight, glass fibre content, density, melting point, crystallisation temperature, processing shrinkage, tensile properties, impact strength, energy absorption, thermal expansion coefficient and heat deflection temperature. The optional group adds properties such as thermal processing stability, flowability measures, flexural and compressive properties, damping, water absorption, long term heat ageing, burning behaviour and electrical properties.
What terms does SIST EN 13677-2:2003 define?
SIST EN 13677-2:2003 uses the terms and definitions of EN ISO 472:2001 for plastics terminology. A few key terms are also used operationally in the document itself.
- GMT - glass mat reinforced polypropylene composite sheet, the material family covered by the standard.
- Blank - the supplied sheet or coil material used to make the test plaque or to be checked for geometry and weight.
- Test plaque - the compression moulded plaque made under Clause 6 and used to cut test specimens.
- Certificate of conformity - the document in which the measured lot properties are reported.
- Production direction - the direction of GMT production; Annex I defines 0° as parallel and 90° as crosswise or perpendicular.
- Flow induced anisotropy - the difference between tensile behaviour parallel and perpendicular to the mould flow direction, reported as a ratio in Annex G.
Who uses SIST EN 13677-2:2003?
SIST EN 13677-2:2003 is used by GMT manufacturers, customers, and test laboratories that need a common way to verify supplied material and compare results. It is also relevant for quality managers and buyers who need a certificate of conformity, lot-based sampling, and agreed methods for dispute resolution.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 13677-2:2003?
SIST EN 13677-2:2003 refers to EN 10204 for inspection documents, EN ISO 472 for plastics vocabulary, and EN ISO 1172, ISO 1183, ISO 2577, EN ISO 3146, EN ISO 75-2, EN ISO 179-2, EN ISO 527-2, EN ISO 527-4, EN ISO 6603-2 and EN ISO 11403-2 for the test methods and related measurements it uses. It also relies on Part 1 of EN 13677 for designation and Part 3 for specific requirements and the selection of properties.
What does the SIST EN 13677-2:2003 document contain?
SIST EN 13677-2:2003 contains the test and control framework for GMT, not just a property list. Clause 7 links each required or optional property to a method and specimen type, which makes the standard useful for specification writing and quality control planning.
The annexes provide the practical measurement procedures:
- Annex A and B describe geometric checks on blanks.
- Annex C explains how to measure material temperature inside heated blanks.
- Annex D covers blank weight and dimensions.
- Annex E covers processing shrinkage.
- Annex F gives the thermal processing stability test.
- Annex G gives the method for flow induced anisotropy.
- Annex H gives heating oven parameters for moulding test plaques.
- Annex I clarifies production direction for marking and specimen orientation.
