- Abstract
This document specifies the particular requirements for wrought aluminium and wrought aluminium alloys in the form of coil coated sheet and strip for general applications. This product is generally supplied in thicknesses up to 3,0 mm.
It is applicable to cold-rolled aluminium and aluminium alloy strip coated by the coil coating process both with liquid as well as with powder paints, either in the final width or slit afterwards, and to sheet obtained from such strip.
It does not apply to coil coated sheet and strip used for special applications such as cans, closures and lids which are dealt with in separate EN 541.

SIST EN 1396:2023/kFprA1:2026 changes 4.1 so that the aluminium or aluminium alloy designation may also be given as a “recycled content variant of” the original EN 573-3 designation when the variation differs only in recycled content. The order also has to state the reference to EN 1396 and, when the document does not specify the values, the applicable mechanical properties.
This matters because the order becomes the main place where material identity, intended use, coating system, quantity tolerances, and any extra requirements are fixed. For a purchaser, that reduces ambiguity when buying a coated product with a recycled-content variation.
Manufacturing method and quality control
SIST EN 1396:2023/kFprA1:2026 replaces 4.2.1 so that manufacturing methods may be chosen independently and do not have to follow the same route for repeat or similar orders. If the manufacturing method is restricted or fixed, the purchase order must say so.
SIST EN 1396:2023/kFprA1:2026 also replaces 4.2.2 so that all inspection and tests required by the relevant European Standard and/or the particular specification are carried out before shipment. Any additional inspection has to be stated on the purchase order.

Mechanical properties
SIST EN 1396:2023/kFprA1:2026 changes 4.2.5 so that the mechanical properties are those given in Clause 5 or those defined and stated on the order. Clause 5 adds that, for any alloy variation only differing in recycled content from an alloy in Table 1 and defined as such in the order, the Table 1 properties apply.
It also states that mechanical properties for alloys and/or tempers not listed in Table 1 must be defined and stated in the order. Table 1 is updated with applicable mechanical properties for EN AW-4115, additional tempers for EN AW-5050, and applicable mechanical properties for EN AW-5050A.
For specifiers, the practical point is simple: if the alloy-temper combination is listed, use the table; if it is not listed, define the properties in the order.
