SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003 is an ETSI European Standard in the Environmental Engineering (EE) series for telecommunications equipment. It classifies ship environments and the severities of the environmental conditions that equipment may face on board vessels, so designers and testers can match equipment to the intended maritime location.

What does SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003 specify?

SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003 specifies classes of environmental conditions for telecommunications equipment designed principally for maritime use, with severities that are intended to be exceeded only with low probability, generally less than 1%. It is organised into a scope, references, definitions, environmental classes, and environmental conditions.

The standard applies to vessels propelled by mechanical means, including offshore units, and to vessels not propelled by mechanical means, including sailing boats and life rafts. It covers vessels from pleasure craft to trawlers, ferry boats, icebreakers, and cargo ships including tankers. In practice, that means the reader must choose the class that matches the vessel type and the equipment location.

Clause 4 defines three environmental classes:

  • Class 6.1 for totally weatherprotected locations
  • Class 6.2 for partly weatherprotected locations
  • Class 6.3 for non-weatherprotected locations

Clause 5 then gives the condition severities for climatic, biological, chemically active, mechanically active, and mechanical conditions. Part 2 of the EN 300 019 series is identified in the foreword as the companion part that specifies the recommended test severities and test methods for these classes.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003?

Environmental class selection

Clause 4.1 states that Class 6.1 is for equipment in totally weatherprotected, heated and ventilated locations after warm-up on board engine-powered vessels, excluding refrigerated cargo spaces, machinery spaces, and locations with considerable heat dissipation. Clause 4.2 covers Class 6.2 for partly weatherprotected locations on engine-powered vessels, excluding refrigerated cargo spaces. Clause 4.3 covers Class 6.3 for non-weatherprotected locations, including refrigerated cargo spaces.

For a buyer or engineer, this is the core decision point: the wrong class means the equipment may be specified for a milder or harsher shipboard environment than it will actually see.

Climate and moisture exposure

Clause 5.1 and Table 1 define the climatic conditions for Classes 6.1 to 6.3, including low and high temperature, humidity, temperature changes, rain, solar radiation, heat radiation, water, and wetness. The notes explain practical points such as cold-soak situations, hot surfaces near machinery, and rapid cooling in humid air.

This matters because shipboard electronics must survive not only ambient air conditions, but also splash, wet surfaces, heat from nearby equipment, and rapid shifts in temperature.

Biological and chemical exposure

Clause 5.2 and Table 2 cover biological conditions such as flora and fauna, distinguishing totally protected locations from locations where mould, fungus, rodents, or other harmful animals may be present. Clause 5.3 and Table 3 cover chemically active substances in air and water, including salts and several gases such as SO2, H2S, NOx, O3, HCl, HF, and NH3, plus sea salts in water.

In practice, this tells the user whether corrosion, contamination, mould growth, or biological attack should be part of the equipment selection and verification plan.

Dust, soot, and other particles

Clause 5.4 and Table 4 specify mechanically active substances such as sand, dust deposition, and soot. The notes point out that oil droplets may also be present in machinery spaces and that dusty cargoes can change exposure.

This is important for ventilation paths, enclosure sealing, filters, and maintenance planning.

Mechanical loading on board

Clause 5.5 and Table 5 define the mechanical conditions for Classes 6M3 and 6M4, including stationary sinusoidal vibration, non-stationary vibration and shock, angular deviation, dynamic angular motion, and steady-state acceleration. The notes identify the vessel axes and explain how the shock response spectra are used.

For installation and qualification, this means the equipment must be mounted and tested for the motion and shock that a shipboard position can actually experience.

What terms does SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003 define?

  • Absolute humidity - the mass of water vapour associated with one cubic metre of dry air in an air/water vapour mixture.
  • Relative humidity - the ratio of water vapour pressure in moist air to the saturation vapour pressure at the same temperature.
  • Non-weatherprotected location - a location where the equipment is not protected from direct weather influences.
  • Weather-protected location - a location where direct weather influences are excluded; the standard distinguishes partly and totally weatherprotected locations.

Who uses SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003?

SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003 is used by telecommunications equipment designers, maritime equipment engineers, test laboratories, quality managers, and buyers who need to specify the expected ship environment for equipment. It is relevant for equipment intended for engine-powered vessels, sailing boats, life rafts, offshore units, and shipboard installations in locations with different exposure levels.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003?

  • ETSI ETR 035 - provides guidance and terminology for environmental engineering.
  • IEC 60721-3-6 - provides the ship-environment classification structure that this standard uses for the 6K, 6B, 6C, 6S, and 6M classes.
  • IEC 60721-2-1 - provides climatic-condition background used for temperature and humidity interpretation.
  • IEC 60068-2-27 - provides shock test guidance and the Maximax reference used for the shock spectra notes.
  • IEC 60092-502 - adds tanker-specific features and cargo-related environmental considerations.
  • ISO 2041 - provides vibration and shock vocabulary.

What does the SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.4:2003 document contain?

The document contains the class definitions for ship environments and the condition tables that go with them. Tables 1 to 5 set out the climatic, biological, chemical, mechanically active, and mechanical severities for the classes. The mechanical table distinguishes Class 6M3 and Class 6M4 and lists vibration, shock, angular motion, and acceleration conditions for shipboard installation.

It also contains explanatory notes that help the user interpret special cases such as warm-up on board, heavy seas, wet surfaces, soot, salt mist, and machinery-space exposure. These contents are used to classify equipment environments and to support later test selection in the associated part of the EN 300 019 series.
