Surface active agents - Fatty alkyl dimethyl amine oxides - Determination of the amine oxide content

This draft European Standard specifies a method for the determination of up to approximately 2 milli-equivalents of tertiary amine oxide. Components which lose their basicity in reaction with acetic anhydride by forming an amide (e.g. primary and secondary amines) interfere. If present, these primary and secondary amines must be determined by a different procedure e.g. reaction with carbondisulfide.

Overview

EN 1791:1997 - published by CEN - specifies a chemical analytical method for the determination of the amine oxide content in fatty alkyl dimethyl amine oxides, a class of surface active agents (surfactants). The procedure covers determination of up to approximately 2 milli-equivalents of tertiary amine oxide in a sample. The standard defines the method’s scope, key limitations, and conditions under which results are valid.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Method applies to tertiary fatty alkyl dimethyl amine oxides up to ~2 meq; it is intended for determination of the amine oxide content in surfactant formulations.
  • Analytical principle: The method uses a chemical reaction sequence that distinguishes tertiary amine oxides via their reactivity; the procedure involves derivatization steps (acetic anhydride is specifically referenced in the standard extract).
  • Limitations and interferences:
    • Primary and secondary amines interfere because they can lose basicity by reacting with acetic anhydride to form amides.
    • When primary or secondary amines are present, they must be determined by a different procedure, for example by reaction with carbon disulfide (CS2) or another appropriate analytical method.
  • Reporting: Results should be reported in appropriate equivalent units consistent with the method’s measurement range (milli-equivalents).

Practical applications

  • Quality control and batch release testing in surfactant manufacturing and formulation facilities (e.g., personal care, detergents, industrial cleaners).
  • Analytical laboratories performing raw material verification and shelf-life/stability studies for amine-oxide-based products.
  • R&D groups developing new fatty alkyl dimethyl amine oxide chemistries who need a standardized measurement method for tertiary amine oxide content.
  • Regulatory and compliance teams that require standardized test methods for product specification and labeling.

Who should use this standard

  • Chemical and formulation manufacturers using fatty alkyl dimethyl amine oxides.
  • Contract and in-house analytical laboratories providing surfactant testing services.
  • Standards committees and quality managers ensuring consistent analytical protocols across production sites.

Related standards (topics)

  • Standards on surface active agents and analytical methods for determining active content.
  • Methods for primary/secondary amine determination (e.g., carbon disulfide derivatization techniques) when interferences are expected.

Using EN 1791:1997 helps ensure reproducible, traceable measurement of tertiary amine oxide content in surfactant products, improving quality control and regulatory compliance for manufacturers and testing laboratories.
