SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 is the Slovenian standard that adopts ETSI EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1. Published by SIST, it defines environmental test methods and severities for telecommunications equipment in stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations. The standard tells manufacturers and test labs how to verify resistibility against climate, moisture, contamination, vibration, shock and, when required, earthquake conditions.
What does SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 specify?
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 specifies the test methods and test severities used to verify equipment against the environmental class that applies to its intended stationary location. It is the Part 2-4 test specification for non-weatherprotected sites, based on the environmental conditions defined in EN 300 019-1-4.
The document is organized into:
- Clause 1 - scope
- Clause 2 - references
- Clause 3 - environmental test specifications
- Clause 4 - earthquake test specification
- Clause 5 - notes to tables
- Annex A - bibliography
Clause 3 contains separate climatic and mechanical specifications for the main stationary-use classes:
- T 4.1 - non-weatherprotected locations, climatic tests
- T 4.1E - non-weatherprotected locations, extended climatic tests
- T 4.2L - non-weatherprotected locations, extremely cold, climatic tests
- T 4.2H - non-weatherprotected locations, extremely warm dry, climatic tests
- Mechanical tests for T 4.1, T 4.1E, T 4.2L and T 4.2H
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006?
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 is mainly a test-selection and test-severity document. Clause 3 tells users which climatic and mechanical stresses to apply, and Clause 4 adds earthquake testing when the customer specifies it.
General test setup
Clause 3 assumes the equipment under test is operational during the test unless the product specification says otherwise. The product specification also has to define the performance to be checked before, during and after testing, and the fail criteria.
This matters because the standard is not only about survival. It also supports functional verification, so the user has to decide whether the equipment must keep operating, restart, or simply remain undamaged.
Clause 3 also says the input and load conditions should drive the equipment at full utilization. Heat dissipation should be maximized, except in the steady-state low-temperature test, where it should be minimized.
Climatic test specifications
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 gives four climatic profiles:
- T 4.1 for most of Europe
- T 4.1E for extended European conditions
- T 4.2L for extremely cold world-wide conditions
- T 4.2H for extremely warm dry world-wide conditions
Each profile combines tests for low and high air temperature, temperature change, humidity, rain, icing and frosting, solar radiation, chemically active substances, dust and sand, and flora and fauna. In practice, the engineer uses the profile that matches the deployment location and then selects the associated IEC 60068-2 test method named in the table.
The notes to tables 1 to 6 explain how to choose the severities. For example, the higher hot or cold temperature may apply when the equipment is protected from solar effects, while the lower or higher value may apply when solar radiation or ventilation changes the thermal load. This matters when the same product is installed in a shaded cabinet, in direct sun, or with forced air flow.
The notes also explain that some conditions are handled by design rather than by a dedicated test. Chemically active substances and mechanically active substances are described with characteristic severities so they can guide component and material selection. For rain, the standard uses an IEC 60068-2 hand-shower style method and says to choose the longer applicable duration. Water from other sources is treated as already covered by the rain test.
Mechanical and earthquake testing
Clause 3.5 defines mechanical tests for vibration, random vibration, bump and shock. The table uses IEC class references 4M3 and 4M5, so the user has to match the mechanical class to the installation conditions. The equipment is mounted in the in-use position, and its function is monitored during the test.
This is important in practice because mounting orientation, cable support and installed stiffness can change the result. The standard explicitly expects the test setup to represent real service mounting.
Clause 4 adds earthquake testing when the customer requires it. It starts with a vibration response investigation to find the lowest resonant frequency of the mounted specimen, using sine sweep or random excitation. Then it applies a time-history earthquake test using the required response spectrum shown in Figure 1 and the acceleration coordinates in Table 7.
The earthquake section also says the mounting configuration should be worst case for weight and stiffness, and that connections, piping and cables should be taken into account. For many users, this is the part that turns the standard into a project requirement: the laboratory has to test the equipment as installed, not just as a loose unit.
What terms does SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 define?
- T 4.1 - The climatic test specification for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations that covers most of Europe.
- T 4.1E - The extended climatic test specification for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations, with wider environmental severities.
- T 4.2L - The climatic test specification for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations in extremely cold world-wide conditions.
- T 4.2H - The climatic test specification for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations in extremely warm dry world-wide conditions.
- RRS - Required Response Spectrum, the target earthquake response shape used for the time-history test.
- ZPA - Zero Period Acceleration, the peak acceleration reference used in the earthquake test specification.
- ASD - Acceleration Spectral Density, used in the random vibration test specification.
Who uses SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006?
Telecommunications equipment manufacturers use SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 when they define environmental qualification plans for fixed installations outdoors or in exposed places. Test laboratories use it to set up climatic, vibration, shock and earthquake tests.
Quality managers and approval engineers use it to check whether the test program matches the intended installation class. Buyers, system integrators and network owners use it when they need a common basis for specifying environmental resistance in procurement or acceptance documents.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006?
- ETSI EN 300 019-1-4 - Defines the environmental conditions for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations.
- IEC 60068-2 - Provides the environmental test methods used throughout the document, including cold, dry heat, temperature change, humidity, water, vibration and shock methods.
- ETSI EN 300 019-2-0 - Gives the general overview of Part 2 of the series.
- IEC 60721-3-4 - Provides the IEC classification used for the mechanical environment references 4M3 and 4M5.
- ANSI T1.329-2000 - Provides the earthquake reference time-history Verteq II used in the earthquake section.
What does the SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 document contain?
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.1:2006 contains severity tables for four climatic classes, a mechanical test table, an earthquake test clause, and notes that explain how to apply the tables. The key tabular material is in Tables 1 to 7, and the earthquake response shape is shown in Figure 1.
It is written for test planning, product qualification and laboratory execution. The tables tell users what kind of stress to apply, the notes tell them how to interpret the stress, and the references point them to the IEC test methods to use.
