Overview
SIST EN 301 091-2 V1.3.2:2007 is a harmonized European standard focused on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio spectrum matters (ERM) specifically for short range devices in the domain of Road Transport and Traffic Telematics (RTTT). This standard addresses radar equipment operating in the 76 GHz to 77 GHz frequency range for mobile automotive applications. Developed by SIST and aligned with the essential requirements of Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive (1999/5/EC), the standard ensures that radar devices use the radio spectrum efficiently and without causing harmful interference, supporting safe, reliable operation in real-world road transport environments.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: The standard exclusively applies to RTTT systems with an integrated antenna, for use in mobile road vehicles, and functioning strictly within the 76 GHz to 77 GHz band as set forth by CEPT and ECC decisions.
- Essential Requirements: Covers the R&TTE Directive Article 3.2 requirements, ensuring radar devices use the allocated spectrum efficiently and avoid interference with other terrestrial or space communications.
- Technical Specifications:
- Permitted frequency range usage and limitations
- Radiated spatial mean and peak power densities (e.i.r.p.)
- Limitations on out-of-band and spurious emissions
- Testing and Conformance:
- Defines comprehensive test procedures to verify compliance with the outlined technical requirements, to be performed under declared operational environmental conditions.
- Includes both unconditional and conditional requirements, as well as essential and alternative test methods, supporting flexibility while maintaining rigorous conformance assessment.
Applications
This standard holds practical significance for several areas in the automotive and transportation industries:
- Automotive Radar Systems: Vital for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, lane change assist, and parking sensors, where short-range radar ensures road safety and system reliability.
- Road Transport Telematics: Supports the interoperability and performance of telematics platforms in connected vehicles.
- Manufacturers and Testing Bodies: Provides clear guidelines and conformance assessment frameworks for developers, producers, and certifiers of automotive radar equipment to achieve EU market access and legal compliance.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensures equipment meets EU harmonization requirements, facilitating cross-border trade and technology deployment within the European Economic Area (EEA).
By following this standard, manufacturers ensure their radar systems not only work optimally but also remain compliant with key European directives, thus supporting safe integration into the increasingly connected and automated transport ecosystem.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance and interoperability, several related standards and documents should be considered:
- EN 301 091-1: Technical characteristics and test methods for radar equipment operating in the 76 GHz to 77 GHz range.
- EN 301 489 Parts 1 and 3: EMC standards for radio equipment and services.
- CEPT/ECC/DEC(02)01: European decision on frequency bands for coordinated introduction of RTTT systems.
- CEPT/ERC REC 70-03: Recommendation concerning the use of short-range devices.
- Other EU Directives: Including the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC (as amended) and Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EEC, which set additional requirements for electrical and electronic devices.
Key Terms: electromagnetic compatibility, radio spectrum, short range devices, automotive radar, RTTT, 76 GHz – 77 GHz, R&TTE Directive, CEPT, EMC, conformance testing, harmonized standard, ADAS.
By adhering to SIST EN 301 091-2 V1.3.2:2007, stakeholders in automotive and road transport industries gain a reliable framework for regulatory compliance, technical performance, and international market readiness of advanced radar-based telematics solutions.
