This first edition of ISO 18400-107, together with ISO 18400-101 and ISO 18400-104, cancels and
replaces ISO 10381-1:2002, which has been technically revised. The ISO 18400 series is based on a
modular structure and cannot be compared to ISO 10381-1 clause by clause.

Introduction
Assembly of the field data and its presentation in an easily readable and understandable form in the
sampling report is an essential precursor to understanding the laboratory results and their proper
presentation and interpretation in the overall investigation report.
Documentation and data management related to sampling within an investigation programme consist
of reporting the sampling procedures, recording field data and observations, and describing the
samples.
Usually, the results from examinations of samples are used to gain information about the total material
or population the samples were taken from.
For a final assessment, a wide variety of information sources will be used.
The sampling report deals with five major activities:
— the instruction of the sampler and any deviation from the sampling plan;
— the field observations and measurements;
— the instructions for testing and analysis;
— comments on sources of uncertainty;
— comments on accuracy, precision and variability.
The degree of detail of information required depends on the objectives of the sampling programme.
This has to be defined in the sampling plan.
This document is part of a series on sampling standards for soil. The role/position of the International
Standards within the total investigation programme is shown in Figure 1.

This document specifies the minimum information required for a sampling report independent of the
purpose of the investigation.

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 11074 apply.

NOTE ISO 11074 defines the terms “sampling record” and “sampling report” as synonyms, for in many fields

4 General
The sampling report deals with five major activities:
— the instruction of the sampler (according to the sampling plan) and any deviations from the plan
(see Clause 5);
— reporting the field activities, including observations and measurements (see Clause 6);
— the instructions for testing and analysis to the laboratory (see Clause 7);
— identification of any potential and actual uncertainties arising from the sampling (including
information on areas that could not be sampled);
— gathering information on anything that might affect accuracy, precision and variability of the test
results.
The sampling report should mention that the report has been prepared in accordance with this
document.

The sampling report should be available to relevant staff working on the project (these staff includes
those engaged in fieldwork, pretreatment, analysis and assessment) at all the stages above.
The field information should be presented in a neat and legible form, because data sheets are not always
retyped, but are submitted to the client and/or filed in their original form.
All reports should be properly cross-referenced.
The sampling report is a factual report. All interpretations and conclusions belong to the overall
investigation report that will be elaborated later and are not within the scope of this document.
Photographs of the site and the samples are useful for identification and when available should be part
of the report.

Introduction
L’ensemble des données de terrain et leur présentation sous une forme lisible et compréhensible dans
le rapport d’échantillonnage est une condition préalable essentielle à la compréhension des résultats de
laboratoire et de leur propre présentation et interprétation dans le rapport de diagnostic général.
La documentation et la gestion des données relatives à l’échantillonnage dans un programme
d’investigation consistent à notifier les procédures d’échantillonnage, enregistrer les données et
observations de terrain, et décrire les échantillons.
En général, les résultats issus des examens d’échantillons sont utilisés pour obtenir des informations
sur l’ensemble des matériaux de sol ou la population dans lesquels les échantillons ont été prélevés.
Pour une évaluation finale, une grande variété de sources d’informations sera utilisée.
Le rapport d’échantillonnage porte sur cinq activités majeures:
— la formation du préleveur et tout écart par rapport au plan d’échantillonnage;
— les observations et les mesures de terrain;
— les instructions relatives aux essais et à l’analyse;
— les commentaires sur les sources d’incertitude;
— les commentaires sur l’exactitude, la fidélité et la variabilité.
Le niveau de détail des informations requises dépend des objectifs du programme d’échantillonnage.
Cela doit être défini dans le programme d’échantillonnage.
Le présent document fait partie d’une série de normes d’échantillonnage des sols. Le rôle/la fonction
des normes au sein de l’ensemble du programme d’investigation est illustré(e) à la Figure 1.

NOTE L’ISO 11074 définit les termes «enregistrement d’échantillonnage» et «rapport d’échantillonnage»
comme des synonymes, car dans de nombreux champs d’application il n’existe pas de distinction nette entre eux.
Dans le présent document, «enregistrer» ou «enregistrement» sont utilisés pour la collecte de données brutes
sur le terrain uniquement. Dans tous les autres cas, «notifier» ou «notification» sont utilisés.
4 Généralités
Le rapport d’échantillonnage porte sur cinq activités majeures:
— la formation du préleveur (selon le plan d’échantillonnage) et tout écart par rapport au plan
d’échantillonnage (voir Article 5);
— la notification des activités de terrain, y compris les observations et les mesures (voir Article 6);
— les instructions relatives aux essais et à l’analyse pour le laboratoire (voir Article 7);
— l’identification de toutes les incertitudes potentielles et réelles liées à l’échantillonnage (y compris
des informations sur des zones ne pouvant pas être échantillonnées);
— la collecte d’informations relatives à des facteurs susceptibles d’avoir une incidence sur l’exactitude,
la fidélité et la variabilité des résultats d’essai.

Il convient que le rapport d’échantillonnage mentionne que le rapport a été élaboré conformément au
présent document.
Il convient que le rapport d’échantillonnage soit mis à la disposition du personnel concerné travaillant
sur le projet (notamment ceux engagés dans les travaux sur site, le prétraitement, l’analyse et
l’évaluation) à toutes les étapes mentionnées ci-dessus.
Il convient que les informations du terrain soient présentées sous une forme claire et lisible, car les
fiches techniques ne sont pas toujours actualisées, mais sont remises au client et/ou archivées sous leur
forme initiale.
Il convient que les rapports fassent l’objet d’une référence croisée.
Le rapport d’échantillonnage est un rapport factuel. Toutes les interprétations et conclusions font
partie du rapport d’investigation global qui sera élaboré par la suite et ne relèvent pas du domaine
d’application du présent document.
Des photos du site et des échantillons sont utiles pour l’identification et, lorsqu’elles sont disponibles, il
convient qu’elles fassent partie du rapport.
De nombreuses données issues du site, y compris les observations concernant les tranchées de
reconnaissance et les trous de sondage, sont à présent enregistrées électroniquement sur le site. Il
convient que les fichiers résultants figurent également dans le rapport.
5 Plan d’échantillonnage
Le plan d’échantillonnage (voir ISO 18400-101) ainsi que les observations et relevés du préleveur
(voir Article 6) constituent les bases du rapport d’échantillonnage. Par conséquent, le rapport
d’échantillonnage doit faire référence aux objectifs du programme d’investigation et au plan
d’échantillonnage.
En général, le plan d’échantillonnage fournit au minimum les informations suivantes concernant
