Overview

SIST EN 2335:2006 defines the technical specifications for spherical plain bearings made from corrosion resisting steel, designed without assembly slots. These aerospace-grade bearings, with optional swaging grooves and lubrication features, are essential components in fixed or moving parts of aircraft structures and control mechanisms. Applicable within a temperature range from -54 °C to 150 °C, their performance is closely tied to the type of lubrication grease specified, adhering to standards for high operational reliability in demanding environments.

This standard, issued by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), aligns with European requirements and ensures compatibility across aerospace applications, emphasizing uniformity in dimensions, load ratings, and material treatments for optimal performance and safety.

Keywords: spherical plain bearings, corrosion resisting steel, aerospace bearings, bearing dimensions, static loads, aircraft components, SIST EN 2335

Key Topics

  • Material Specifications:
Bearings are constructed from corrosion-resistant steel, ensuring durability and resistance to harsh operational conditions.

  • Design Variants:
Components covered include options with or without swaging grooves and lubrication holes/grooves, providing flexibility for different assembly and maintenance needs.

  • Lubrication Compatibility:
Bearings can be lubricated with either ester-type (code letter A) or synthetic hydrocarbon-type (code letter B) high-pressure greases, each with specific temperature operational ranges. The correct grease selection is vital for ensuring bearing longevity and operational safety.

  • Temperature Range:
Bearings are qualified for use from -54 °C to 150 °C. When using ester-type grease, the operational temperature is limited to 121 °C, while synthetic hydrocarbon grease allows usage up to 177 °C.

  • Dimensional and Load Requirements:
The standard specifies precise dimensions and permissible static loads, ensuring predictable fit and performance in aerospace assemblies.

  • Surface Treatments:
Requirements for surface treatments such as passivation and dry-film lubricants are specified, contributing to enhanced wear resistance and antiscoring properties.

Applications

  • Aircraft Structure and Control Mechanisms:
These spherical plain bearings are used in both fixed and actuated elements in airframes, including flight control linkages, landing gear assemblies, and other mechanisms requiring angular movement under load.

  • Maintenance and Replacement:
Uniform specifications facilitate streamlined maintenance, part replacement, and supply chain standardization, ensuring safety and reducing downtime in aerospace operations.

  • High-performance Environments:
The combination of corrosion-resistant materials and adaptable lubrication solutions allows these bearings to perform reliably under varying environmental and operational stresses encountered in aviation.
