Overview

SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006 is a standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligned with the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (ETSI). It specifies environmental conditions and test methods for telecommunications equipment installed in ground vehicles. This standard provides a framework for assessing the resistibility and durability of telecommunication devices exposed to diverse environmental influences when permanently or temporarily fitted in vehicles powered by electric motors or combustion engines, excluding combustion engine compartments.

Adhering to this standard is vital for manufacturers and operators to ensure equipment reliability, quality, and compliance across variable environmental conditions encountered in terrestrial vehicles.

Key Topics

  • Environmental Classes: Sets requirements for different vehicle environment types, as per EN 300 019-1-5.
  • Test Methods and Severities: Defines climatic and mechanical test procedures including temperature, humidity, vibration, and shock.
  • Installation Types:
    • Protected Installations: Equipment in weatherprotected, heated vehicle compartments.
    • Partly Protected Installations: Equipment in less protected vehicle locations, excluding extreme cold non-heated areas.
  • Reference Methods: Relies on established standards such as IEC 60068-2 for specific environmental test procedures.
  • Exclusions: Does not cover equipment used inside combustion engine compartments, due to distinct, harsher environmental conditions.

Applications

The standard applies to any telecommunication equipment designed for use in ground vehicles, covering areas such as:

  • Public Safety and Emergency Services: Ensures continued operation of radio, communication, and signaling equipment in harsh conditions for ambulances, police, and fire services.
  • Commercial Vehicle Operations: Supports reliability of telematics, fleet management, and logistics tracking equipment installed in trucks, buses, and delivery vehicles.
  • Utility and Service Vehicles: Guarantees robust performance for communications and data acquisition instruments in vehicles used by utilities, maintenance, and repair crews.
  • Special Purpose Vehicles: Relevant for equipment in military, mining, and construction vehicles exposed to rigorous operational and transport environments.

Implementing this standard helps organizations minimize risks related to equipment failure, extend product lifespan, and meet European and international market requirements for environmental robustness.

Related Standards

For comprehensive compliance and integration, consider the following related standards:

  • EN 300 019-1-5: Specifies environmental classifications for ground vehicle installations, serving as a fundamental reference for determining applicable test classes.
  • IEC 60068-2 Series: Provides detailed methods for environmental testing, including cold, dry heat, vibration, shock, and humidity tests.
  • EN 300 019-2-0: Offers an introduction and general overview of environmental test specifications for telecommunications equipment.
  • IEC 60721-3-3: Addresses classification of environmental conditions for stationary equipment at weatherprotected locations.
  • ETSI ETR 035: Offers guidance and definitions in the domain of equipment environmental engineering.

Understanding and applying SIST EN 300 019-2-5 in combination with these standards ensures robust environmental design and compliance for telecommunications equipment in ground vehicle installations, enhancing operational reliability and customer confidence.
