Overview
EN ISO 16136:2006/A1:2019 is Amendment 1 to ISO 16136:2006 and covers industrial butterfly valves made from thermoplastic materials. Published by CEN in August 2019, the amendment updates normative references, definitions and technical requirements for thermoplastic valve bodies, seats and actuators. It also aligns the standard with related European requirements (Annex ZA) to support conformity with Directive 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive) within the scope of the document.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and declarations: The amendment adds a note that manufacturers may declare different DN and/or PN values for a valve.
- Updated normative references: Several standards were dated or replaced (for example EN 558:2017, ISO 5211:2017, ISO 1167-1:2006 and others), ensuring consistency with more recent test and dimension standards.
- Materials: Permitted body/bonnet materials are referenced to ISO 15493 / ISO 15494 / ISO 10931 and include ABS, PE, PP, PVC-C, PVC-U and PVDF. Material testing requirements for body and bonnet/cover raw materials are updated.
- Design strength and testing: Design strength verification is required via pressure testing of the body and long-term behaviour tests of the complete valve in accordance with ISO 9393-2.
- Rating factors (f): The amendment revises the minimum rating factors for various thermoplastic materials across temperatures (a new table replaces the previous Table 1). Manufacturers can declare additional rating factors where applicable.
- Face-to-face dimensions: For flanged connections, face-to-face dimensions shall be selected from EN 558; other end connections remain the manufacturer’s responsibility.
- Leaktightness and operational forces: Seat and packing/shell leaktightness testing is specified per ISO 9393-2. Permissible manual operating forces are aligned with EN 12570 and must not impair component serviceability.
- Terminology and notes: Editorial changes standardize notes to “Note X to entry” and add references to ISO/IEC terminological resources.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Valve manufacturers choosing thermoplastic materials and designing butterfly valves for industrial fluid systems.
- Design engineers and system specifiers ensuring component selection meets pressure, temperature and dimensional requirements.
- Testing laboratories and quality assurance teams performing pressure, long-term and leaktightness tests.
- Procurement and compliance officers who need to verify conformity with EU Pressure Equipment Directive requirements.
- Installers and maintenance personnel referencing face-to-face dimensions and permissible manual forces for safe assembly and operation.
Related Standards (if applicable)
- ISO 9393-2 (design strength / testing)
- EN 558 (face-to-face dimensions)
- EN 12570 (operating forces)
- ISO 5211, ISO 1167-1, ISO 15493 / ISO 15494, ISO 10931 (material and actuator references)
- Directive 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive) - Annex ZA relationship
This amendment ensures EN ISO 16136 remains current for industrial butterfly valves of thermoplastics, improving clarity on material limits, testing requirements and regulatory alignment.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/patents).
