SIST EN 13864:2005
(Main)Surfaces for sports areas - Determination of tensile strength of synthetic yarns
Surfaces for sports areas - Determination of tensile strength of synthetic yarns
This European Standard describes two methods for the determination of the tensile properties of pile yarns in the construction of synthetic turf. Method A is used for determining the tensile properties of synthetic yarns taken from packages prior to the manufacture of synthetic turf. Method B is used for determining the tensile properties of pile yarns from the manufactured synthetic turf. The results from the two methods are not comparable and method B is less accurate.

Overview
SIST EN 13864:2005 is a European Standard developed by CEN that outlines standardized procedures for determining the tensile strength of synthetic yarns used in sports turf surfaces. This standard is essential for manufacturers, testers, and quality control professionals involved in the production and assessment of synthetic turf, ensuring the consistent performance and durability of sports surfaces. EN 13864 details two distinct methods-Method A and Method B-for evaluating the tensile properties of pile yarns from both yarn packages and finished synthetic turf products.
Key Topics
- Purpose and Scope: EN 13864 describes testing methods for tensile strength specific to synthetic yarns used in sports area surfaces, enabling reliable performance evaluation.
- Method A: Applied to yarns extracted from original packages before turf manufacture. It involves measuring tensile properties under controlled conditions to assess yarn quality at the source.
- Method B: Used for yarns sampled from finished synthetic turf products. Provides tensile data representative of installed turf but is noted to be less accurate than Method A.
- Terminology and Definitions: Includes terms such as breaking force, elongation at break, gauge length, and breaking tenacity, critical for understanding and interpreting results.
- Testing Apparatus: Requires precision tensile testing machines compliant with ISO 5893, specialized clamps to prevent slippage, and devices to measure elongation and yarn dimensions accurately.
- Sampling and Preparation: Specifies procedures for selecting test specimens from yarn packages or turf, including sample sizes, conditioning, and assessment for damage before testing.
- Test Conditions: Emphasizes controlled environmental conditions (23 ± 2 °C temperature, 50 ± 5% relative humidity) and standardized preparation to ensure reproducibility.
- Test Procedure: Details step-by-step instructions on mounting specimens, applying pre-tension, conducting tensile tests at specified speeds, and criteria for valid results.
- Data Analysis: Methods for calculating elongation at break, breaking tenacity, and statistical treatment of results, ensuring meaningful interpretation.
- Reporting Requirements: Specifies comprehensive test report content, including reference to SIST EN 13864:2005, method used, product details, test conditions, and detailed results.
Applications
- Synthetic Turf Manufacturers: Use EN 13864 to verify the tensile strength of pile yarns before installation, ensuring material quality and compliance with performance standards.
- Quality Assurance Laboratories: Standardize testing protocols for synthetic turf yarns, facilitating consistent product certification and resolving disputes regarding product durability.
- Sports Facility Designers and Managers: Gain assurance from standardized testing about turf surface durability and performance, influencing selection of synthetic turf products.
- Regulatory Bodies and Standardization Organizations: Reference EN 13864 in specifications and regulations concerning sports surfaces and synthetic turf safety and performance standards.
- Research and Development: Provide a benchmark method for developing new synthetic yarn materials, improving tensile strength properties for longer-lasting synthetic sports surfaces.
Related Standards
- EN ISO 2062:1995 – Specifies methods for determining breaking force and elongation of textile yarns, foundational for Method A in EN 13864.
- EN ISO 5079:1995 – Covers breaking force and elongation determination of individual textile fibres, supporting accurate tensile testing.
- ISO 5893 – Defines specifications for tensile testing machines used in plastics and rubber testing, applicable for testing synthetic yarns.
