SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000
(Main)Plastics - Epoxy powder moulding compounds (EP-PMCs) - Part 2: Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties (ISO 15252-2:1999)
- Abstract
This part of ISO 15252 specifies the methods of preparation of test specimens and the test methods to be used in
determining the properties of epoxy powder moulding compounds (EP-PMCs). Requirements for handling test
material and for conditioning both the test material before moulding and the specimens before testing are given
here.
Procedures and conditions for the preparation of test specimens and procedures for measuring properties of the
materials from which these specimens are made are given. Properties and test methods which are suitable and
necessary to characterize PMCs are listed.
The properties have been selected from the general test methods in ISO 10350-1. Other test methods in wide use
for, or of particular significance to, PMCs are also included in this part of ISO 15252, as are the designatory
properties found in ISO 15252-1.
In order to obtain reproducible and comparable test results, it is necessary to use the methods of preparation and
conditioning, the specimen dimensions and the test procedures specified herein. Values determined will not
necessarily be identical to those obtained using specimens of different dimensions or prepared using different
procedures.

SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000 is the SIST adoption of EN ISO 15252-2:1999 for epoxy powder moulding compounds (EP-PMCs). It specifies how to prepare test specimens and which tests to use to determine EP-PMC properties, so results can be reproduced and compared between laboratories. The standard is written for people who need reliable test data for thermosetting moulding materials.
What does SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000 specify?
SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000 specifies the preparation of test specimens and the test methods used to determine properties of EP-PMCs. It also sets the handling and conditioning steps needed before moulding and before testing, because those steps affect the measured values in practice.
The document is organized into six clauses and four tables:
| Clause / table | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Clause 1 | Scope |
| Clause 2 | Normative references |
| Clause 3 | Terms and definitions |
| Clause 4 | Preparation of test specimens |
| Clause 5 | Conditioning of test specimens |
| Clause 6 | Determination of properties |
| Tables 1-2 | Moulding conditions for injection and compression moulding |
| Tables 3-4 | Properties, specimen forms, test methods and test conditions |
The scope links specimen preparation with the property tests that matter for EP-PMCs. In practice, that means a laboratory does not just measure a material - it follows a defined route from moulding to conditioning to testing.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000?
Preparation of specimens
SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000 requires specimens to be prepared by one consistent procedure, either injection moulding or compression moulding, and to use the same processing conditions for comparable results. That matters because the moulding route can change orientation, cure state and measured properties.
The material shall be kept in moisture-proof containers until use. For filled or reinforced materials, moisture content is expressed as a percentage of the total mass of the compound, which is important for receiving inspection and for documenting test conditions.
Pretreatment and moulding
For injection moulding, no pretreatment is normally needed unless the manufacturer recommends it. For compression moulding, pretreatment may follow ISO 295, including preforming, drying, high-frequency preheating or preplastification.
Injection-moulded specimens are prepared in accordance with ISO 10724-1 and/or ISO 10724-2, using the temperature, mould temperature, injection velocity and cure-time ranges given in Table 1. The standard requires definite values, not ranges, to be recorded for the chosen melt temperature, mould temperature and cure time. In practice, this is what makes the test repeatable from one batch or lab to another.
Compression-moulded specimens are prepared in accordance with ISO 295, using the mould temperature, mould pressure and cure-time ranges given in Table 2. The cure time is selected according to curing behaviour and pretreatment, but it must be the same for all specimens of the same thickness from one EP-PMC type and stated with the results. If a material has high thermal flow and injection-moulded test specimens cannot be made, the standard allows compression moulding or machining of compression-moulded plates.
Conditioning before testing
SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000 gives two conditioning methods. Method 1 follows ISO 291 for at least 16 h in the standard atmosphere, and Method 2 uses distilled water at ambient temperature for 24 h followed by 2 h in the standard atmosphere.
This matters because moisture affects many plastics properties, especially mechanical, electrical and water-sensitive results. The method used has to match the property being reported and the tables that call for it.
Properties and test methods
Clause 6 requires the use of ISO 10350-1 rules and notes when determining and presenting data. All tests are carried out in the standard laboratory atmosphere unless Tables 3 or 4 say otherwise.
Tables 3 and 4 divide the work into property groups:
- rheological and processing properties, such as moulding shrinkage, apparent density, bulk factor and transfer flow
- mechanical properties, such as tensile, flexural and impact behaviour
- thermal properties, such as deflection temperature under load, coefficient of linear thermal expansion and burning behaviour
- electrical properties, such as permittivity, dissipation factor, resistivity, electric strength and tracking resistance
- other properties, such as water absorption and density
The tables also fix the specimen form, orientation and test setup. That is important because EP-PMCs can behave differently along and across melt flow direction, and the standard records that difference where it matters.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000 define?
- EP-PMCs - epoxy powder moulding compounds, the thermosetting materials covered by the standard.
- thermal flow - the flow behaviour of a plasticized thermosetting moulding compound, such as when filling a mould cavity.
- moulding shrinkage - the change in size measured after moulding, used to judge dimensional behaviour.
- bulk factor - the ratio used to compare a moulding compound's bulk volume to its density-related moulding behaviour.
- transfer flow - a measure of how a thermosetting moulding material flows during transfer moulding.
- proof tracking index (PTI) - the index used to describe tracking resistance under moist conditions in the electrical test section.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000?
SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000 is used by plastics laboratories, materials manufacturers, quality control teams and product developers working with EP-PMCs. It is also useful for buyers and specifiers who need to compare test data from different suppliers on the same basis.
In practice, these users apply it to prepare specimens, run property tests, compare batches, and document material performance for thermosetting applications.

What does the SIST EN ISO 15252-2:2000 document contain?
The document contains the specimen preparation rules, conditioning methods, and the test programme for EP-PMCs. Tables 1 and 2 set the moulding conditions for injection moulding and compression moulding, while Tables 3 and 4 link each property to a specimen form, test method and test setup.
It also provides the practical details needed for comparison work, such as when to use ISO 291 conditioning, when to measure properties in relation to melt flow direction, and when to report classification-style results for burning behaviour. For testing and quality control, this is the part of the standard that turns a material description into reproducible measurements.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 15252 may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
