INTRODUCTION
As a result of increasing worldwide environmental awareness, there are significant
requirements for effective management of electricity supply between consumers, distributors
and generators. The smart grid is considered one of the most important key technologies to
realize an effective electricity supply channel. In the grid, smart meters connected with
IP/cloud networking will be used to provide demand-response communication between
suppliers and consumers.
In the residential sector, a movement similar to that for the management of electricity is
ongoing also for other utility lines, and for such demands, many efforts for the development of
specifications for smart houses have been proceeding, in the framework of the current

development of smart cities. We can see such activities e.g. in SHR/HEMS program . In the
near future, smart cities will require the deployment of smart houses, that by suitable adoption
of platforms and technologies (e.g. cloud-based services, Internet of Things, etc.) will provide
various services for residents, which are not only utility management, but also e.g. health care,
security, entertainment and other services. The electronic equipment for the providing of
public utility management and of these services apply broadband IP/cloud networking for their
interactive data communication. In future, residential buildings will be equipped with such
gateways, servers and home networks. This equipment has to be secured to be operated in a
trouble-free environment, the same as telecommunication and internet access, to protect it
from unsuitable environmental conditions in the residences.
This document defines 486,2 mm (19 in) residential racks and cabinets based on

IEC 60297-3-100, suitable for installing equipment for smart houses in proper conditions .

This part of IEC 60297 specifies dimensions, specification for installation, environmental
aspects and safety aspect of residential racks and cabinets based on IEC 60297 series, for
smart houses, likely to be part of smart cities.

4 Arrangement overview
Residential rack or cabinet for a smart house is installed in a room of a residential building.
Figure 1 and Figure 2 introduce examples of arrangement for residential rack and cabinet
installations.

6 Equipment categories and the relevant mounting locations
Figure 5 shows typical equipment categories and their mounting locations in a residential rack
or cabinet. One protective partition may be equipped in 1 U space between tier 1 and tier 2.
Respective mounting spaces from tier 1 to tier 3 can be adjusted within Figure 5 indicated
mounting spaces according to the rack or cabinet height and volume of equipment to be
mounted.
Rack or cabinet manufacturers shall provide a document specifying the allowable location of
equipment categories in their product.

7 Installation and fixing position
7.1 Installation
7.1.1 Installation of residential racks
Residential racks are installed in equipped closets of residential buildings. These racks are
fixed on the closet panels or building walls at the rack frames, as well as fixed on the closet or
building floor or at the rack bottoms, and/or on the ceiling at the rack tops attaching optional
fixing frame. In the respective cases, the fixing position shall be applied.

7.1.2 Installation of residential cabinets
Residential cabinets are positioned along a wall or at the corners of rooms in residential
buildings. These cabinets are fixed on the building walls at the cabinet frames or back panels,
and/or side frames or panels, as well as on the floors or at the cabinet bottoms including
optional plinths/bases, and/or on the ceilings. At the cabinet tops, air-cooling ducts and/or
cabling spaces may be prepared. In the respective cases, the fixing position may be applied.
7.2 Fixing positions
The fixing positions of residential racks or cabinets are defined based on IEC 60917-2-5
mounting points. Figure 6 shows the fixing positions.

At each of the four corners of the cabinet rear, sides, top and bottom, one fixing hole from the recommended fixing
positions shall be chosen.
At each of the two locations in the center of the cabinet rear and side, one fixing hole from the optional fixing
positions may be chosen.
Fixing holes shall be sized to accommodate M10 or larger bolts.

8 Environmental aspects
8.1 General
Residential racks or cabinets shall be designed, manufactured and supplied to maintain safe
and reliable operations of their equipment in the specific installation condition in residential
buildings and, at the same time, they should be environmental sustainable products as well as
home appliances and home electronics.
8.2 Environmental protection performance level
The environmental test requirements for residential racks or cabinets are defined in existing
standards. Table 3 shows minimum required performance level for the residential racks or
cabinets.

9 Safety aspects
Safety aspects which cover both human hazard and product safety shall be fully in
compliance with IEC 61587-1.

for smart houses under local construction regulations
A.1 Applications of residential racks and cabinets for smart houses under
local construction regulations or guides
In general, construction of residential buildings shall be met with local construction
regulations or local construction guide primarily, because design of the houses comes from
regional cultures and environments. Therefore, considering such conditions, residential racks
or cabinets shall be installed.
A.2 An application example of the residential rack under a local construction
regulation
Figure A.1 shows an application example of the residential rack under a local construction
regulation, in which the integrated entry-layout of the home utility lines and equipment space
of metering devices for such home utility lines are defined in the building.
