(Main)Pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes -- Part 3: Specifications for individual materials -- Sheet 12: Requirements for polyethylene and polypropylene film tapes with pressure sensitive adhesive
- Abstract
This sheet of IEC 60454 3 contains requirements for polyethylene and polypropylene film tapes with pressure sensitive adhesives. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application, and not based on this specification alone.

SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 is the Slovenian version of EN 60454-3-12:2006, based on IEC 60454-3-12:2006. It specifies requirements for polyethylene and polypropylene film tapes with pressure-sensitive adhesive used for electrical purposes, so manufacturers, test laboratories, and purchasers can check whether a tape type meets the document’s stated performance levels.
What does SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 specify?
SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 specifies individual-material requirements for polyethylene and polypropylene film tapes with pressure-sensitive adhesive for electrical use. The standard is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, classification and designation, requirements, test methods, and marking, labelling and packaging, plus Annex ZA for referenced publications.
The scope also makes an important practical point: conformance to the specification shows that a material meets established performance levels, but a user still has to judge whether those levels suit the actual application.

| ZA | Normative references to international publications and their corresponding European publications |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006?
SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 builds on the general requirements of IEC 60454-1, and its specific properties are checked with the methods in IEC 60454-2. In practice, that means a supplier has to classify the tape correctly and show test results that match the relevant type.
- Clause 4 classifies polyethylene film tapes into six types and polypropylene film tapes into three types. For polyethylene, the types are split by thermal index and minimum temperature rating; for polypropylene, they are split by film and adhesive combination. This matters because buyers must order the exact type that matches the intended heat and low-temperature duty.
- Clause 4 also gives ordering designations for each type. These designations are the product identifiers used in procurement and specification documents, so they reduce ambiguity between buyer and supplier.
- Clause 5 says all applicable requirements of IEC 60454-1 apply. In practice, this ties the sheet to the general rules for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes instead of treating it as a stand-alone product description.
- Table 1 sets the shared requirements for all types, including thickness, width, length, electrolytic corrosion performance, and thermal endurance. This is the basic acceptance check for incoming material and quality control.
- Table 2 sets type-specific requirements for tensile strength, elongation, adhesion to steel, flagging, adhesion to backing, breakdown voltage, low-temperature adhesion to backing, and shear adhesion to backing after water immersion. These are the core performance checks that show whether a tape will hold mechanically and electrically in use.
- Clause 5.1 requires thermal endurance evidence when the purchaser asks for it. For polyethylene types, the thermal index depends on the type group; for polypropylene types, the thermal index is 105. This matters when the tape will be exposed to elevated temperatures for long periods.
- Clause 5.2 requires low-temperature performance evidence for polyethylene tapes when the purchaser asks for it. Table 3 links each low-temperature rating to the test temperatures used in IEC 60454-2, so the user can match the tape to the expected cold environment.
- Clauses 6 and 7 require tests to be carried out using the relevant parts of IEC 60454-2, and marking, labelling and packaging to follow IEC 60454-1 unless otherwise specified. That keeps test results comparable and helps ensure the supplied product is identified and handled consistently.
What terms does SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 define?
SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 uses the definitions of IEC 60454-1, and its key terms are used in the classification and test requirements.
- Thermal index - the temperature-related performance level used to classify tape types for long-term heat exposure.
- Minimum temperature rating - the lowest temperature level assigned to a polyethylene type for use and testing.
- Pressure-sensitive adhesive - an adhesive that provides bonding under light pressure, which is the adhesive form covered by this sheet.
- Biaxially oriented polypropylene film - polypropylene film stretched in two directions to give the tape its characteristic film properties.
- Electrolytic corrosion - the corrosion-related check used to confirm that the tape does not create unacceptable electrical corrosion effects.
- Flagging test - a test that checks whether the tape lifts or flags from the backing under the stated conditions.
Who uses SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006?
SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 is used by tape manufacturers, electrical-material suppliers, test laboratories, and purchasers who specify insulating tapes for electrical applications. It is also relevant to quality teams who verify conformance, because the standard defines which properties must be tested and which companion standards provide the methods.
What changed in SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 supersedes EN 60454-3-12:1998 and EN 60454-3-18:2003. The revision consolidates the text of EN 60454-3-18 into this sheet and is identified as a technical revision.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006?
SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 depends on three referenced standards.
- IEC 60426:1973 - provides the test method for determining electrolytic corrosion with insulating materials.
- IEC 60454-1:1992 - gives the general requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes.
- IEC 60454-2:1994 - gives the test methods used for the property checks in this sheet.
What does the SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 document contain?
SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 contains the classification system, ordering designations, and the property limits for polyethylene and polypropylene film tapes with pressure-sensitive adhesive. It also includes the test-method references needed to verify thickness, width, length, corrosion behavior, thermal endurance, tensile and adhesion performance, breakdown voltage, low-temperature behavior, and water-immersion shear adhesion.
The document’s tables organize the acceptance criteria by property and by type, so users can compare a proposed tape against the required performance profile. Annex ZA adds the European cross-reference list for the normative publications used with the standard.
