Tests for mechanical and physical properties of aggregates - Part 5: Determination of the water content by drying in a ventilated oven

This standard describes the reference method used for type testing and in cases of dispute for the determination of the water content of aggregates by drying in a ventilated oven. For other purposes, in particular factory production control, other methods may be used provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference method has been established.

Overview

EN 1097-5:2008 is the CEN reference method for determining the water content of aggregates by oven-drying in a ventilated oven. It is intended as the official procedure for type testing and resolving disputes. For routine or factory production control, alternative moisture measurement methods may be used only if an established working relationship to this reference method exists.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Defines the oven-drying reference method for total free water (surface + accessible pore water) in aggregate samples.
  • Oven conditions: Default drying temperature is (110 ± 5) °C; lower temperatures (e.g., (40 ± 5) °C) are allowed for temperature-sensitive aggregates. Air movement must not cause loss of fines.
  • Test portion size:
    • If upper sieve size D ≥ 1.0 mm: minimum mass = 0.2 × D (kg).
    • If D < 1.0 mm: minimum mass = 0.2 kg.
    • Annex A: for lightweight aggregates, sample size is volume-based (1.0–2.0 L depending on D).
  • Apparatus and accuracy:
    • Ventilated drying oven, desiccator, heat-resistant trays, stirrer and a balance accurate to 0.1% of the test portion mass.
  • Procedure:
    • Weigh moist sample (M1), dry to constant mass (M3) in ventilated oven, with successive weighings at least 1 h apart until difference ≤ 0.1%.
    • Cooling may be performed in a desiccator or a closed cabinet; Annex A allows immediate weighing of hot trays for lightweight aggregates (with appropriate care).
  • Calculation:
    • Water content w (%) = ((M1 − M3) / M3) × 100. Results expressed to the nearest 0.1%.
  • Precision:
    • Informative precision data (Annex C) gives repeatability r1 = 0.11 + 0.079·X, where X is the mean water content.

Applications and users

EN 1097-5:2008 is used by:

  • Materials and testing laboratories performing type tests or dispute resolution for aggregate suppliers and construction projects.
  • Aggregate producers establishing reference moisture values and validating alternative moisture measurement methods for factory production control.
  • Construction quality control teams who need accurate, standardized moisture data for concrete, asphalt and other mix designs.
  • Regulatory bodies and specifiers requiring a standardized method for contractual compliance.

Practical uses include determining correct dry-mix proportions, calculating absorbed water for particle-density tests, and verifying moisture corrections in production.
