(Main)Thermal insulating products for building applications - Determination of behaviour under point load
Thermal insulating products for building applications - Determination of behaviour under point load
This European Standard specifies equipment and procedures for determining the behaviour of products under a force applied to a small area of a test specimen at a given speed. It is applicable to thermal insulating products.
This European Standard can be used to determine whether the products have sufficient strength to withstand forces applied directly to them either during installation or during application, mainly caused by pedestrian traffic.
NOTE The test methods given in the main body of the standard and in Annex A are reported and interpreted in different ways. The similarities that exist between the methods are not sufficient to permit reasonable comparisons to be made.

Overview
EN 12430:2013 - published by CEN - is the European test standard for determining the behaviour of thermal insulating products under a point load. It specifies the required equipment, specimen preparation, test procedure and result reporting for applying a compressive force to a small, well-defined area of an insulation specimen. The method is intended to assess whether insulation products have sufficient local strength to withstand forces encountered during installation or in service (for example pedestrian traffic).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to thermal insulating products used in building applications; useful for product evaluation, quality control and compliance with product standards.
- Test principle: A circular steel indentor applies a point load centrally to a square specimen while force and displacement are recorded to produce a force–deformation curve. Results include the compressive force at the critical point (Fp) and/or point load at a specified deformation.
- Apparatus essentials:
- Steel cylindrical indentor diameter (79.8 ± 0.1) mm.
- Compression testing machine with rigid plates and a ball joint if needed to ensure axial loading.
- Displacement-measuring device (reading ±5% or ±0.1 mm) and force sensor (reading ±1%).
- Recording device for simultaneous force–displacement curves.
- Specimens & conditioning: Standard specimen size 300 × 300 mm (other sizes may be agreed or specified in product standards). Test specimens retained at original thickness with skins/facings kept unless otherwise stated. Conditioning normally at (23 ± 5) °C (dispute conditions: 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5 % RH).
- Procedure parameters: Preload of (2.5 ± 0.25) N, indentor travel speed (50 ± 5) mm/min. Test stops when the critical point is determined or when deformation reaches 20 %.
- Results and accuracy: Report individual values and mean Fp and/or point load for specified deformation. Estimated repeatability and reproducibility (from round-robin data) are roughly repeatability ≈ 5–8% and reproducibility ≈ 15–25%, depending on the measured parameter.
Note: Annex A provides normative modifications for cellular glass products (positioning device, full-size or quarter-section specimens) and results from main body and Annex A are not always directly comparable.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers - product development and factory quality control.
- Testing laboratories - routine conformity and type testing to demonstrate strength under point loads.
- Specifiers, architects and installers - selecting insulation for applications exposed to local loads (e.g., roof terraces, walkways, floating floors).
- Regulators and certifiers - evidence for performance claims and harmonised product standards.
