prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 is a draft European Standard from the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) for the safety of electrically operated commercial hoods. It sets particular requirements for hoods installed above commercial cooking appliances, including complete units and separate parts that assemble into a complete working hood with a fan. It is aimed at manufacturers, designers, installers, test laboratories, and compliance teams working with commercial kitchen extraction equipment.

What does prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 specify?

prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 specifies safety requirements for electrically operated commercial hoods used above commercial cooking appliances such as ranges, griddles, griddle grills, and deep fat fryers. The rated voltage is limited to not more than 250 V for single-phase hoods connected between one phase and neutral, and 480 V for other hoods.

The standard covers back-draft ventilation systems, down-draft ventilation systems, and fume extraction modules. It is written for equipment used in commercial kitchens and similar non-public areas such as restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, and butcheries.

The document follows the IEC Part 1 / Part 2 structure. It uses the general safety requirements from Part 1 and then modifies or replaces the relevant clauses for commercial electric hoods, with Annex B and Annex P as the annexes used in this part.

AnnexWhat it covers
BBattery-operated appliances, separable batteries, and detachable batteries for battery-operated appliances - marked not applicable here
PGuidance for appliances used in tropical climates, including modified leakage current values

What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026?

The main requirements focus on shock protection, installation information, motor starting, heating, leakage current, construction, fire behavior, and ozone hazards. In practice, the standard tells you what the hood must be built like, how it must be tested, and what the user and installer must be told.

Electrical safety and instructions

Clause 6.1 requires the appliance to be class I for protection against electric shock. That means the hood is expected to rely on protective earthing, so the design and verification file need to support earth continuity.

Clause 7 requires specific marking and instructions. Replaceable illumination lamps must be marked with their maximum power input, and the instructions must cover air intake when the hood is used with gas or other fuel-burning appliances, regular filter cleaning, fire risk if cleaning is neglected, and the instruction not to flambé under the appliance. The installation instructions must also state minimum distances, ventilation requirements, and gas-safety precautions.

Clause 7.101 requires a terminal for external equipotential bonding, marked with the correct symbol. In practice, installers must have a clear point for bonding the hood to the site equipotential conductor.

Operation, heating, and abnormal use

Clause 9.101 requires fan motors that provide cooling needed for Clause 11 compliance to start under all voltage conditions that can occur in use. The test uses 0.85 times rated voltage, and in some cases 1.06 times rated voltage, so motor selection and control logic must tolerate real supply variation.

Clause 11.2 sets the heating test arrangement for hoods above a hob, including the required installation position and test corner. Clause 11.7 requires operation until steady conditions are reached, and Clause 11.8 removes the external enclosure temperature-rise limit. Clause 19.101 adds an abnormal-operation test with all gas burners switched on and no vessels, so the hood must remain safe under heavy cooking heat.

Leakage current and construction

Clauses 13.2 and 16.2 set leakage-current limits that depend on whether the appliance is cord-and-plug connected or permanently connected, and on its rated power input. Annex P gives lower leakage-current values for tropical climates, so the intended market matters when the electrical test plan is set.

Clauses 22.101 to 22.105 address moisture and grease, thermal cut-outs, visible warning colors, secure wall fixing, and cleanability. The hood must be designed so grease and moisture do not collect where they would affect creepage or clearance, parts behind filters must be cleanable, and wall-mounted units must not rely on simple key-hole slots alone. For motors whose unexpected starting could create a hazard, thermal cut-outs must be non-self-resetting and trip-free.

Clause 25.7 specifies oil-resistant sheathed flexible cable of the 60245 IEC 57 type. Clause 25.3 also sets requirements for connection after installation for heavy appliances, which affects how installers sequence mounting and wiring.

Materials, insulation, and fire behavior

Clause 27.2 requires an equipotential bonding terminal that is connected to all fixed exposed metal parts and can accept the specified conductor size range. Clause 28 requires fasteners to comply with the stated ISO fastener standards, and Table 101 gives the assembling torques for screws that provide earthing continuity.

Clause 29.2 sets pollution degree 3 for the microenvironment and requires CTI not less than 250 unless the insulation is protected from contamination. Clause 30 requires heat and fire testing, including ball-pressure and glow-wire testing. Clause 30.101 adds a specific check that combustible material must not extend a fire originating from the cooking surface. Clause 32.101 applies when the hood includes ionizing-air filtration and limits ozone by reference to the IEC 60335-2-65 test.

What terms does prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 define?

  • Rated power input - the sum of the power inputs of the elements that can be on at the same time, using the combination that gives the highest total.
  • Normal operation - operation after installation according to the instructions, with the hood not connected to a duct; combined appliances are tested with the other appliances operating, and if not interlocked, with the fan switched off.
  • Hood - a motor-operated appliance intended to collect and remove contaminated air from catering appliances, either by recirculating it through filters or exhausting it from the room.
  • Comparative tracking index (CTI) - the insulation property used in Clause 29.2 to check suitability for pollution degree 3 conditions.
  • Glow-wire flammability index (GWFI) - the fire-performance index used in Clause 30.2.1 for the glow-wire test criterion.

Who uses prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026?

Manufacturers and product designers use prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 to design commercial hoods that meet the safety tests and installation assumptions in the standard. Test laboratories use it to set up heating, starting, leakage-current, fire, and abnormal-operation tests.

Installers and service teams use it for mounting, earthing, wiring, and maintenance instructions. Quality managers, buyers, and compliance teams use it when checking whether a hood is suitable for commercial kitchens in restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, and butcheries.

What changed in prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 from the previous edition?

This draft will supersede EN 60335-2-99:2003, EN 60335-2-99:2003/A1:2019, and EN 60335-2-99:2003/A11:2023. The underlying IEC second edition is a technical revision that replaces IEC 60335-2-99:2003 and Amendment 1:2017.

The stated technical changes are alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020, conversion of some notes into normative text, exclusion of battery-operated appliances and appliances used in areas open to the public, a new requirement for appliances incorporating means for ionizing air, and harmonization with related IEC/TC 61 standards.

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this international standard that the execution of its
provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.
Guidance documents concerning the application of the safety requirements for appliances can
be accessed via TC 61 supporting documents on the IEC website
https://www.iec.ch/tc61/supportingdocuments
This information is given for the convenience of users of this International Standard and does
not constitute a replacement for the normative text in this standard.
This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such
as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in normal
use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal situations that
can be expected in practice.
This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that there
is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply mains.
However, national wiring rules may differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another Part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant Part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
When a Part 2 standard does not include additional requirements to cover hazards dealt with
in Part 1, Part 1 applies.
NOTE 1 This means that the technical committees responsible for the Part 2 standards have determined that it is
not necessary to specify particular requirements for the appliance in question over and above the general
requirements.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
NOTE 2 Horizontal publications, basic safety publications and group safety publications covering a hazard are not
applicable since they have been taken into consideration when developing the general and particular requirements
for the IEC 60335 series of standards.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found
to have other features that impair the level of safety covered by these requirements.
An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed
in the requirements of this standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of the
requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply with the
standard.
NOTE 3 Standards dealing with non-safety aspects of household appliances are:
– IEC standards published by TC 59 concerning methods for measuring performance;

Part 2-99: Particular requirements for commercial electric hoods

1 Scope
This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following.
This part of IEC 60335 deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial hoods intended
for installation above commercial cooking appliances such as ranges, griddles, griddle grills
and deep fat fryers, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single phase hoods
connected between one phase and neutral, and 480 V for other hoods. Only single complete
units and hoods supplied as separate parts which when assembled form a complete working
hood, incorporating a fan, are within the scope of the standard.
The hood may be used above one or more appliance or types of appliances.
The following extraction systems are within the scope of this standard:
– back-draft ventilation systems;
– down-draft ventilation systems;
– fume extraction modules.
These appliances are not intended for household and similar purposes. They are used in areas
not open to the public, for example in kitchens of restaurants, canteens, hospitals and in
commercial enterprises such as bakeries and butcheries.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by these types
of appliances.
Attention is drawn to the fact that:
– for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional
requirements can be necessary;
– in many countries additional requirements including ventilation requirements are specified
by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of
labour and similar authorities.
This standard does not apply to:
– domestic range hoods (IEC 60335-2-31);
– purpose-built hoods, although this standard can be used as a guide (a purpose-built hood
is either constructed on-site or specially constructed in the factory and is not mass
