prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 is a CENELEC draft European standard for the safety of commercial electric hoods. It specifies particular safety requirements for electrically operated hoods installed above commercial cooking appliances, and it is written for manufacturers, test laboratories, installers and others who need to judge whether a hood design and its instructions are suitable for commercial use.

What does prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 specify?

prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 covers electrically operated commercial hoods for installation above ranges, griddles, griddle grills and deep fat fryers. It applies to single complete units and to hoods supplied as separate parts that form a complete working hood with a fan when assembled.

The standard covers back-draft ventilation systems, down-draft ventilation systems and fume extraction modules. It is aimed at appliances used in places such as restaurant kitchens, canteens, hospitals, bakeries and butcheries, rather than household or similar use.

The document follows the IEC 60335 structure: it uses the general requirements of IEC 60335-1 and then modifies or adds to them for this product family. Its annexes are listed below.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex BBattery-operated appliances, separable batteries and detachable batteries for battery-operated appliances
Annex PGuidance for applying the standard to appliances used in tropical climates

Clause 1 gives the scope and exclusions. Clauses 2 to 32 cover references, terms, general safety requirements, tests, construction, marking, insulation, fire resistance and related hazards, followed by annexes and a bibliography.

What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026?

prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 keeps the safety focus on electric shock, overheating, fire, mechanical hazards and installation-related risks. For a manufacturer or tester, the practical point is that the hood is judged as a complete appliance in its installed condition, not only as a component.

Electrical protection and classification

Clause 6.1 requires appliances to be Class I with respect to protection against electric shock. That means exposed metal parts rely on protective earthing, so earthing design, terminals and bonding become central parts of the safety assessment.

Clause 27.2 requires a terminal for an external equipotential conductor, with effective contact to fixed exposed metal parts and a practical location for connection after installation. In practice, installers need a reliable bonding point, and the design must support it.

Marking and instructions

Clause 7 requires the maximum power input of replaceable lamps to be marked near the lampholder. Clause 7.12 also requires instructions on room air intake when the hood is used with gas or other fuel-burning appliances, regular filter cleaning, fire risk from poor cleaning, and the prohibition on flambé under the appliance.

Clause 7.12.1 adds installation instructions such as minimum distances, ventilation and exhaust-air rules, precautions with other open-flued appliances, and the need for a non-self-resetting device when the hood is used above a gas appliance. Clause 7.15 makes the lamp wattage marking visible during replacement, and Clause 7.101 requires marking of equipotential bonding terminals.

Starting, heating and abnormal operation

Clause 9.101 requires fan motors that provide the cooling needed for Clause 11 compliance to start under all voltage conditions that can occur in use. The test checks start-up at reduced and increased voltage, which matters because failure to start can remove cooling and create a heat hazard.

Clause 11 sets the heating test with the hood installed as instructed and, for hoods above hobs, at the minimum distance stated by the manufacturer. Clause 19.101 repeats the hob test without vessels and with all gas burners on, so the appliance is challenged in a worst-case overheating condition.

Leakage current and insulation

Clauses 13.2 and 16.2 modify the leakage-current limits for class I appliances, using values related to rated power input and different treatment for cord-and-plug connected, stationary and portable appliances. Annex P gives lower limits for tropical climates. In practice, this means leakage-current testing is not taken directly from Part 1 but adjusted for this product family and climate context.

Construction, wiring and fixing

Clause 22.101 requires protection so that moisture and grease do not collect where they would affect creepage distances and clearances, and it keeps specified insulation out of air ducts. Clause 22.102 requires certain motor thermal cut-outs to be non-self-resetting and trip-free, with suitable disconnection of supply circuits.

Clause 22.104 requires secure fixing to a wall or other support, without simple key-hole or hook arrangements that could let the hood lift off unintentionally. Clause 22.105 requires parts that collect grease, including behind filters, to be cleanable. Clause 25.3 and 25.7 address heavy permanently connected appliances and require an oil-resistant flexible supply cord of the specified type when a cord is used.

Earthing, screws and fire resistance

Clause 28.4 and Table 101 deal with screws that maintain electrical and earthing continuity, so contact pressure stays reliable under stress and corrosion. Clause 29.2 sets the insulation environment as pollution degree 3 and uses CTI requirements unless the insulation is well protected.

Clauses 30.1, 30.2.1 and 30.101 cover heat and fire resistance, including ball pressure, glow-wire and burning tests on relevant parts. Clause 30.101 is especially important for hoods because it requires the appliance not to use combustible material that could spread a fire from the cooking surface. Clause 32.101 adds an ozone check for hoods with ionizing-air filter systems.

What terms does prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 define?

Hood - A motor-operated appliance intended to collect and remove contaminated air from catering appliances, either recirculating filtered air or discharging it outside.

Normal operation - Operation after installation according to the instructions, with the appliance not connected to a duct; if it is used with other appliances, the test is done with those appliances in operation.

Rated power input - The sum of the power inputs of all elements that can be on at the same time, using the highest possible combination when several are possible.

Class I - An appliance type that depends on protective earthing for protection against electric shock.

CTI - Comparative tracking index, used here to judge insulating materials exposed to pollution degree 3 conditions.

GWFI - Glow-wire flammability index, used in the fire-resistance assessment of exposed parts.

Trip-free - A cut-out action that operates independently of the position or manipulation of the actuating member.

Who uses prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026?

prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 is used by manufacturers of commercial electric hoods, including hood and extraction-system designers who need to build in earthing, fixing, wiring, filtering and fire-safety features from the start. It is also used by test laboratories, certification bodies and compliance teams that verify heating, leakage current, stability, construction and fire-performance tests.

Installers and technical writers use it for installation and user instructions, especially where the hood is fitted above gas or other fuel-burning cooking appliances. Buyers and specifiers in catering, healthcare and food-service settings use it to compare products for kitchens in restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries and butcheries.

What changed in prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026 from the previous edition?

The draft text is based on IEC 60335-2-99:2021 and is identified as superseding EN IEC 60335-2-99:2024 and its amendments and corrigenda. The underlying IEC revision from the earlier edition aligned the text with IEC 60335-1:2020, converted several notes into normative text, excluded battery-operated appliances and appliances used in areas open to the public, added a requirement for appliances incorporating means for ionizing air, and harmonized the wording with other standards under IEC/TC61/MT32.

Which standards are used with prEN IEC 60335-2-99:2026?

  • IEC 60335-1 - provides the general safety requirements that this Part 2 modifies and supplements.
  • IEC 60335-2-31 - identifies domestic range hoods, which are outside this part’s scope.
  • IEC 60335-2-65 - provides the ozone test method used for appliances with ionizing air treatment.
  • ISO 898-1 - gives the properties for carbon steel and alloy steel screws used in construction.
  • ISO 3506-1, ISO 3506-2, ISO 3506-3, ISO 3506-4 - cover corrosion-resistant stainless-steel fasteners used for screws, nuts and similar fasteners.
  • IEC 60695-2-12 - provides the glow-wire flammability index used in the fire tests.
  • IEC 60695-11-10 - provides the HB flammability classification used for filter material.
  • ISO 9772 - provides the burning test for HBF material used for certain non-metallic filter materials.
  • IEC 60364 - is noted in the introduction as the wiring-rules basis the appliance should be compatible with.

What does the prEN IEC 60335-2-99 document contain?

The document contains the full Part 1-based safety structure for this product family, with product-specific additions and replacements in Clauses 1 to 32. It includes installation and user-instruction requirements, electrical tests, heating and abnormal-operation tests, construction rules for grease, moisture and fixing, and fire-resistance checks for exposed and internal parts.

It also contains a special starting test for fan motors, leakage-current requirements adjusted for power input, and an earthing-continuity screw test supported by Table 101. The annexes add tropical-climate guidance in Annex P and the Part 1 battery annex listing in Annex B, while Clause 30.101 refers to a normative needle-flame test in Annex E.

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this international standard that the execution of its
provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.
Guidance documents concerning the application of the safety requirements for appliances can
be accessed via TC 61 supporting documents on the IEC website
https://www.iec.ch/tc61/supportingdocuments
This information is given for the convenience of users of this International Standard and does
not constitute a replacement for the normative text in this standard.
This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such
as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in normal
use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal situations that
can be expected in practice.
This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that there
is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply mains.
However, national wiring rules may differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another Part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant Part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
When a Part 2 standard does not include additional requirements to cover hazards dealt with
in Part 1, Part 1 applies.
NOTE 1 This means that the technical committees responsible for the Part 2 standards have determined that it is
not necessary to specify particular requirements for the appliance in question over and above the general
requirements.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
NOTE 2 Horizontal publications, basic safety publications and group safety publications covering a hazard are not
applicable since they have been taken into consideration when developing the general and particular requirements
for the IEC 60335 series of standards.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found
to have other features that impair the level of safety covered by these requirements.
An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed
in the requirements of this standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of the
requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply with the
standard.
NOTE 3 Standards dealing with non-safety aspects of household appliances are:
– IEC standards published by TC 59 concerning methods for measuring performance;
– CISPR 11, CISPR 14-1 and relevant IEC 61000-3 series standards concerning electromagnetic emissions;
– CISPR 14-2 concerning electromagnetic immunity;
– IEC standards published by TC 111 concerning environmental matters.

Part 2-99: Particular requirements for commercial electric hoods

1 Scope
This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following.
This part of IEC 60335 deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial hoods intended
for installation above commercial cooking appliances such as ranges, griddles, griddle grills
and deep fat fryers, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single phase hoods
connected between one phase and neutral, and 480 V for other hoods. Only single complete
units and hoods supplied as separate parts which when assembled form a complete working
hood, incorporating a fan, are within the scope of the standard.
The hood may be used above one or more appliance or types of appliances.
The following extraction systems are within the scope of this standard:
– back-draft ventilation systems;
– down-draft ventilation systems;
– fume extraction modules.
These appliances are not intended for household and similar purposes. They are used in areas
not open to the public, for example in kitchens of restaurants, canteens, hospitals and in
commercial enterprises such as bakeries and butcheries.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by these types
of appliances.
Attention is drawn to the fact that:
– for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional
requirements can be necessary;
– in many countries additional requirements including ventilation requirements are specified
by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of
labour and similar authorities.
This standard does not apply to:
– domestic range hoods (IEC 60335-2-31);
– purpose-built hoods, although this standard can be used as a guide (a purpose-built hood
is either constructed on-site or specially constructed in the factory and is not mass
