Overview - EN 1272:2017 (table mounted chairs)
EN 1272:2017 is the CEN European Standard specifying safety requirements and test methods for table mounted chairs intended for children who can sit unaided up to a maximum weight of 15 kg. Prepared by CEN/TC 252, it supersedes EN 1272:1998 and adopts a hazard‑based approach to reduce mechanical, chemical and thermal risks associated with table‑mounted seating for infants and toddlers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & definitions - product types covered, age/weight limit (≤ 15 kg) and updated terminology.
- Test equipment and methods - standardized test probes, test masses (A, B, C), small torso probe, test foam, small parts cylinder, feeler gauge, loading pad, bouncing test machine and anchoring support tests.
- Chemical hazards - requirements for migration of heavy metals, formaldehyde limits and restrictions on colourants/primary aromatic amines.
- Thermal hazards - surface temperature limits and flame propagation requirements to limit burn risk.
- Mechanical hazards - hazard‑based requirements and tests covering:
- finger and head entrapment (including feet‑first head entrapment prevention),
- moving‑part compression and shear points,
- entanglement from cords/ribbons,
- choking and ingestion (small parts),
- suffocation (plastic packaging/decals),
- hazardous edges, corners and protrusions,
- inadequate structural integrity (static and dynamic strength), slippage of anchoring supports and bouncing performance,
- risks from falling (footrests, restraint systems, lateral protection/backrest height).
- Product information and marking - mandatory marking, durable labels, purchase information, and instructions for safe use; includes symbols for age/weight ranges and warnings.
Practical applications - who uses EN 1272:2017
- Manufacturers & designers of table mounted chairs use the standard to design safe products and select materials.
- Testing laboratories implement the specified test methods and equipment (e.g., test probes, bouncing machines, test masses) to verify compliance.
- Regulators, certification bodies and importers/retailers rely on EN 1272:2017 for conformity assessment and to support regulatory compliance within the EU/EFTA context.
- Product safety engineers use the hazard‑based clauses to conduct risk assessments and update instructions, labels and restraint requirements.
Related standards and references
- Prepared by CEN/TC 252 (Child use and care articles) and intended to be adopted as national standards across CEN member states.
- For comprehensive compliance, consult other CEN child care articles standards and national regulations referenced in the normative sections of EN 1272:2017.
EN 1272:2017 is essential for safe design, testing and regulatory compliance of table mounted chairs - integrating safety requirements, chemical limits and standardized test methods to protect infants and toddlers.
