Overview

SIST EN 13496:2025 specifies standardized methods for determining the mechanical properties-specifically tensile strength and elongation-of glass fibre meshes used as reinforcement in external thermal insulation composite kits with renders (ETIC kits). This European standard applies to both rectangular and triaxial glass fibre meshes, ensuring that these materials provide reliable and consistent performance in building thermal insulation applications. It includes precise equipment requirements, specimen preparation, conditioning, and test procedures, supporting improved product quality and safety in construction.

Key Topics

  • Tensile Strength and Elongation Testing: Outlines the procedures for measuring the maximum force the mesh can withstand and its elongation at failure, considering both warp and weft directions (plus two weft directions for triaxial meshes).
  • Types of Conditioning: Details three possible conditions for test specimens - no additional conditioning, 24-hour warm alkali conditioning, and 28-day alkali conditioning - reflecting durability needs in construction environments.
  • Specimen Preparation and Sampling: Specifies how to prepare, measure, and handle test specimens for consistency and accuracy, including sampling distance from roll edges and uniformity of thread count.
  • Test Apparatus Requirements: Defines the mechanical and dimensional accuracy needed for callipers, tensile testing machines, clamps, and alkaline-resistant containers.
  • Comprehensive Reporting: Requires detailed test reports, including product identification, mesh characteristics (such as mass per unit area, mesh size, and mesh opening), test conditions, deviations, and a summary of all results.

Applications

SIST EN 13496:2025 is essential for the construction sector, particularly for manufacturers and installers of external thermal insulation composite kits with renders. The standard ensures:

  • Product Qualification: Validates the mechanical integrity of glass fibre meshes used for ETIC kits, helping manufacturers meet European and international building codes.
  • Quality Control in Production: Provides a robust framework for routine testing during manufacturing, ensuring consistent material performance across batches.
  • Specification in Building Projects: Enables architects, engineers, and contractors to specify tested, reliable reinforcement meshes for facades, energy-saving retrofit systems, and other external insulation projects.
  • Durability Assessment: The inclusion of alkaline conditioning simulates long-term exposure to external environments, verifying the mesh’s suitability for demanding building applications.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assists stakeholders in meeting harmonized European standards, facilitating market access within the construction industry.

Related Standards

For broader context and integration into quality management systems, consider these related standards:

  • EN ISO 9229: Provides terminology for thermal insulation, ensuring consistent communication across documentation and testing.
  • EN 12127:1997: Specifies protocols for determining the mass per unit area of textile fabrics, relevant to mesh characterization.
  • ISO 1887: Identifies methods for determining the combustible matter content in textile glass, supporting further material analysis.
  • Other ETICS-related standards: Many additional SIST and EN documents address aspects such as system performance, fire resistance, and installation methods for ETICs.

Keywords: SIST EN 13496:2025, glass fibre mesh, ETIC kits, thermal insulation products, tensile strength, elongation, mechanical testing, external insulation, standardization, construction materials, building applications, quality control, European standard, façade systems.

By following SIST EN 13496:2025, organizations can ensure reliable performance, regulatory compliance, and higher confidence in the thermal insulation materials used in modern building construction.

4 Principle
The maximum tensile strength and corresponding elongation of glass fibre meshes are determined using
a tensile testing machine. The tensile strength of the meshes shall be tested in both test directions, the
warp and the weft direction. For triaxial meshes, two weft directions are recognized and both shall be
tested. Three types of conditioning can be carried out before the test:
— A, no additional conditioning;
— B, 24 h warm alkali conditioning;
— C, 28-day alkali conditioning.
