Overview

EN 60335-1:2002/A11:2004 is an amendment (A11) to the European standard EN 60335-1 covering general safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances. Issued by CENELEC and aligned with IEC work, this amendment updates specific clauses to harmonize European practice with international references and corrigenda. Key implementation dates were set for national adoption (dop: 2004-10-01) and withdrawal of conflicting national standards (dow: 2006-10-01).

The amendment is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, conformity assessment bodies and regulatory authorities concerned with appliance safety, clearances, creepage distances and transformer insulation standards.

Key Topics

  • Alignment with IEC: A11 realigns EN 60335-1 with the corresponding IEC text and corrigenda to ensure consistent international application of safety requirements.
  • Clause 24 (Components): The amendment specifies a change to clause 24.5 by deleting the second paragraph of the requirement, refining component-related obligations.
  • Annex G (normative): Annex G concerning safety isolating transformers is included as a normative element in the amendment.
  • Clause 29 (Clearances, creepage distances and solid insulation): The text for clause 29 is replaced to reference the distances specified in items 2a, 2c and 3 of Table 13 in IEC 61558-1. The note clarifies that values for pollution degree 2 apply.
  • Bibliography updates: References to tool safety standards were updated to include IEC 60745 (hand-held motor-operated tools) and IEC 61029 (transportable motor-operated tools).

Applications

This amendment has practical value across the product lifecycle:

  • For design and engineering, it clarifies required clearance and creepage practices by referencing IEC 61558-1, helping designers select appropriate insulation and spacing to meet safety classifications (including pollution degree 2).
  • For testing and certification, laboratories should adopt the referenced IEC distances and updated normative text for Annex G to ensure consistent test procedures.
  • For manufacturers and compliance teams, the changes reduce ambiguity between national and international requirements and support smoother market access across CENELEC member countries.
  • For regulators and market surveillance, the amendment provides a clear basis for assessing conformity with the harmonized EN/IEC requirements.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1:2002 (base standard)
  • IEC 60335-1:2001 (international reference)
  • IEC 61558-1 (referenced for clearances and creepage distances, Table 13)
  • IEC 60745 (safety of hand-held motor-operated electric tools)
  • IEC 61029 (safety of transportable motor-operated electric tools)
