Abstract

This standard is the fourth in a series of five parts to assess the thermal compatibility of repair products and systems, comprising grouts, mortars and concretes and surface protection systems, used for the repair and protection of concrete structures. The method measures the effect of dry thermal cycling without exposure to de-icing salt, upon the repair product or system. The method is suitable for repair products and systems based on CC, PCC and PC binders and for surface protection systems.

SIST EN 13687-4:2002 is the Slovene adoption of EN 13687-4:2002 from CEN. It specifies a laboratory test for dry thermal cycling of repair products and systems for concrete structures, including grouts, mortars, concretes and surface protection systems. The method is used to check how these products withstand repeated temperature changes and how their appearance and bond to concrete are affected.

What does SIST EN 13687-4:2002 specify?

SIST EN 13687-4:2002 is part 4 of a five-part series on thermal compatibility for repair products and systems used on concrete structures. This part covers dry thermal cycling without de-icing salt or water, and it applies to products based on CC, PCC and PC binders as well as to surface protection systems.

The document is organized into clauses for scope, normative references, terms and definitions, test principle, apparatus, specimen preparation, procedure, evaluation of results and test report. It also includes one normative annex.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ASummary of temperatures and humidities for curing, conditioning and testing of repair products and systems

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 13687-4:2002?

Specimens and substrate

Clause 4 requires the product to be applied as a layer on a reference concrete test specimen prepared to EN 1766. Clause 6 says three concrete test specimens are needed for each test, with one used as a reference specimen. In practice, this gives a common concrete base so the test compares products on the same substrate.

Curing and conditioning

Clause 6 and Annex A set the curing and conditioning route before cycling. The standard laboratory climate is 21 ± 2 °C and 60 ± 10 % relative humidity (RH), and the curing time depends on whether the product is CC, PCC or PC, or a surface protection system. This matters because the specimen history before the thermal test has to match the binder system being assessed.

Dry thermal cycling

Clause 7 defines the cycle in air, from 21 °C down to -25 °C, then up to 55 °C, and back to 21 °C, with a total cycle time of 6 h. The two test specimens are placed upright in the climatic cabinet with spacing between specimens and from the cabinet walls. The number of cycles is taken from prEN 1504-2 or prEN 1504-3, so the product standard determines how severe the exposure is.

Visual inspection during and after cycling

Clause 8 requires inspection every ten cycles. For CC, PCC and PC products, the standard looks for scaling and cracking; for surface protection systems, it looks for cracks, peeling, blistering, delamination, bubbling and other surface defects. Cracks greater than 0.05 mm and any observed surface alterations are reported, so the method records both small and obvious damage.

Adhesion after cycling

Clause 8 also requires a pull-off test according to EN 1542 after the specimens have been conditioned for at least seven days at standard climate after cycling. This shows whether the product still bonds adequately to the concrete after repeated temperature changes.

Test report

Clause 9 lists the information to record, including specimen identity, preparation date, storage conditions, equipment details, cycle count, pull-off results, fracture form and observed surface changes. In practice, this gives a complete record for product evaluation, laboratory comparison and technical reporting.

What terms does SIST EN 13687-4:2002 define?

For the purposes of this standard, the terms and definitions in EN 1504-1 apply.

  • CC, PCC and PC - Binder families named in the scope for grouts, mortars and concretes covered by this test.
  • Surface protection system - A product system tested here for resistance to dry thermal cycling when applied to concrete.
  • Reference concrete test specimen - The EN 1766 concrete specimen used as the base for applying the product.
  • Standard laboratory climate - The conditioning environment of 21 ± 2 °C and 60 ± 10 % RH used before, between and after test stages.
  • Relative humidity (RH) - The humidity measure used to specify the laboratory climate and conditioning conditions.
  • Pull-off test - The EN 1542 test used to measure adhesion after thermal cycling.
  • Thermal compatibility - The ability of the repair product or system to withstand thermal cycling without unacceptable surface damage or loss of bond.

Who uses SIST EN 13687-4:2002?

Manufacturers of repair products and surface protection systems use SIST EN 13687-4:2002 when qualifying products for concrete repair work. Test laboratories use it to prepare specimens, run the thermal cycle and measure post-cycling adhesion. Quality managers, specifiers and buyers use the results to compare products intended for concrete structures and to check whether a system is suitable for the required thermal exposure.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 13687-4:2002?

  • EN 1504-1 - Provides the terms and definitions used in clause 3.
  • EN 1766 - Gives the reference concretes and specimen dimensions used for testing.
  • EN 1542 - Specifies the pull-off bond strength test used after cycling.
  • EN 196-1 - Is referenced in Annex A for preparation of CC materials.
  • prEN 1504-2 - Identifies surface protection systems and the cycle count to be used for them.
  • prEN 1504-3 - Identifies structural and non-structural repair products and the cycle count to be used for them.
  • EN 13687-1 - The related part for freeze-thaw cycling with de-icing salt immersion.
  • EN 13687-2 - The related part for thunder-shower cycling (thermal shock).
  • EN 13687-3 - The related part for thermal cycling without de-icing salt impact.
  • EN 13687-5 - The related part for resistance to temperature shock.

What does the SIST EN 13687-4:2002 document contain?

The document contains the complete test method: scope, references, terms, principle, apparatus, specimen preparation, procedure, evaluation and test report. It also includes Figure 1 for the dry thermal cycle and Annex A for curing, conditioning and testing temperatures and humidities.

The body of the standard describes the laboratory equipment, the specimen setup, the thermal cabinet conditions and the visual checks during cycling. The evaluation clause explains what damage to look for and when to measure pull-off strength.

The test report clause works as a reporting checklist for laboratories. It covers the product identity, specimen details, number of cycles, adhesion results, fracture modes and observed surface changes.
