Vitreous and porcelain enamels - Method of test of self-cleaning properties (ISO 8291:1986)

Applies to enamelled walls of roasting devices, grills and baking devices; self-cleaning consists in the capacity first to absorb oil or fat in droplet form, and then to volatilize the greater part of the fat or oil by the sequential processes of distillation, decomposition, and combustion. Is not applicable to pyrolytically cleaning enamels.

Overview

EN ISO 8291:2022 - "Vitreous and porcelain enamels - Method of test of self-cleaning properties (ISO 8291:1986)" specifies a comparative test method to evaluate the self-cleaning properties of vitreous and porcelain enamelled walls used in roasting devices, grills and baking devices. The standard defines how enamel surfaces absorb oil droplets and volatilize most of the oil by distillation, decomposition and combustion. It is explicitly not applicable to pyrolytically cleaning enamels.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: Apply defined drops of testing oil to enamelled specimens, heat cycles at controlled temperature, repeat until a visible surface gloss (non-volatile residue) appears; compare the number of cycles required for test and reference specimens.
  • Testing oil: Refined household soya oil (fresh, ≤3 months old); store in closed container at 5–7 °C.
  • Drop volume/mass and application:
    • Drops of about 20–25 mg produced with pipette/burette/syringe (ISO 648 referenced).
    • Template with five holes (15 mm diameter) and spacing feet used to place drops from a height of 20 mm.
  • Thermal cycle: Specimens exposed in a ventilated muffle furnace (hot-air oven or baking oven) at 250 ± 10 °C for 1 hour then cooled to ambient (18–28 °C). Repeat cycles until gloss appears on at least three of five exposed areas.
  • Assessment and comparison:
    • Use a specially prepared reference specimen produced per ISO 2723.
    • If the difference in number of cycles to gloss between test and reference is ≤ 1 cycle, specimens are considered to have the same self-cleaning performance.
    • The method is comparative and partly subjective (visual gloss assessment); results can be affected by oven draught and oil composition.
  • Quality control note: When used for QC, coating thickness of test and reference specimens should not differ by more than 20 µm; self-cleaning enamels typically have coating thickness ≥ 150 µm.

Applications and users

Who benefits from EN ISO 8291:2022:

  • Enamel manufacturers and formulators validating self-cleaning vitreous and porcelain enamels.
  • Appliance manufacturers (ovens, grills, roasting and baking devices) specifying enamel performance.
  • Independent testing and quality control laboratories performing comparative performance tests.
  • Product specifiers, procurement teams and standards bodies requiring reproducible test methods for enamelled surfaces.

Practical applications:

  • Quality control during production of self-cleaning enamel finishes.
  • Comparative evaluation of enamel formulations and process changes.
  • Performance verification for product claims related to ease of cleaning and oil resistance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organiration for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bedies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take patt in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council. They are approved in accordance with ISO procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard ISO 8291 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 107,
Metallic and other non-organic coatings.
Users should note that all International Standards undergo revision from time to time
and that any reference made herein to any other International Standard implies its
