Overview
SIST EN ISO 6769:2023 is an international standard developed by ISO in collaboration with CEN that specifies a reliable method for determining the surface scratch hardness of vitreous and porcelain enamels using the Mohs hardness scale. This standard provides a practical test procedure to assess the durability and wear resistance of enamel surfaces by measuring their resistance to scratching by reference minerals of known hardness. It applies to enamel coatings on various substrates such as steel, aluminum, and cast iron.
This updated standard supersedes EN 15771:2010 and ensures harmonized testing methods across European and international markets, supporting quality control and material specification validation in the coatings and surface treatment industries.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines a test method to determine scratch hardness of vitreous and porcelain enamels according to the Mohs scale.
- Mohs Scale: Uses a scale of minerals ranked 1 to 10 based on scratch resistance, from talc (softest) to diamond (hardest).
- Test Procedure:
- Prepare enamel test specimens as per ISO 28764.
- Place specimen on a firm support.
- Scratch enamel surface manually with reference minerals in ascending order of hardness.
- Inspect visually for scratch marks.
- Reference Minerals include:
- Talc (1), Gypsum (2), Calcite (3), Fluorspar (4), Apatite (5), Feldspar (6), Quartz (7), Topaz (8), Corundum (9), Diamond (10).
- Assessment: The highest Mohs hardness mineral that does not scratch the surface indicates the scratch resistance.
- Test Report Requirements: Identification of specimen, reference document citation, minerals used, results, anomalies, procedural deviations, and test date.
Applications
- Quality Control: Ensures enamel coatings meet required hardness levels for durability in manufacturing and production.
- Material Specification: Confirms that vitreous and porcelain enamels conform to specified scratch hardness for industrial or consumer applications.
- Product Development: Assists R&D teams in assessing scratch resistance properties of new enamel formulations.
- Surface Protection: Used in corrosion protection industries to assess coatings on metal substrates for automotive, cookware, architectural panels, and sanitary fixtures.
- Compliance Testing: Supports compliance with national and international regulations requiring standardized hardness testing.
- Failure Analysis: Identifies potential causes of surface wear or damage in enamel-coated products.
