Overview
SIST EN 50525-3-11:2011 is a European standard that specifies requirements for low voltage energy cables with special fire performance. It applies to flexible cables with halogen-free thermoplastic insulation and sheath, designed for rated voltages up to and including 300/500 V. These cables are distinguished by their low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when exposed to fire, making them a safer choice for environments where fire safety is critical. Both flat and circular cable designs are included under this scope. The standard is issued by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligns directly with EN 50525-3-11.
Key Topics
- Halogen-Free Thermoplastic Insulation and Sheath: Limits the release of toxic halogen gases during fire, protecting people and sensitive equipment.
- Low Smoke Emission: Ensures high levels of smoke transparency according to EN 61034-2, providing safer evacuation routes in case of fire.
- Corrosive Gas Control: Minimizes damage to building infrastructure and electronic systems by reducing corrosive emissions.
- Flexible Cable Types: Covers both light duty (H03Z1Z1-F, H03Z1Z1H2-F) and ordinary duty (H05Z1Z1-F, H05Z1Z1H2-F) cables.
- Operating Conditions: Rated for maximum conductor temperature of 70 °C.
- Compliant Testing Methods: Testing procedures include electrical, mechanical, fire, and chemical resistance, referencing methods from EN 61034-2, EN 50395, EN 50396, and others.
Applications
The electric cables covered by SIST EN 50525-3-11:2011 are designed for a range of low voltage installations, notably:
- Domestic Appliance Connections: Ideal for connecting appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and kitchen devices to fixed power supplies.
- Public Buildings and Infrastructures: Essential in locations where minimizing smoke and harmful emissions during fire is required, such as hospitals, schools, office complexes, airports, and transport hubs.
- Commercial Installations: Used in commercial centers and IT facilities to protect sensitive electronics from corrosive gases.
- Retrofit and New Constructions: Suitable for both upgrades and new builds where fire safety standards are a priority.
- Underground and Concealed Installations: Appropriate for spaces with limited ventilation, as halogen-free, low smoke cables prevent hazardous buildup in case of fire.
Key Benefits:
- Enhanced fire safety for occupants and first responders.
- Reduced environmental and equipment damage during fire events.
- Compliance with modern fire performance regulations and best practices.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive safety and reliability, SIST EN 50525-3-11:2011 is intended to be used in conjunction with several related standards:
- EN 50525-1: General requirements for low voltage energy cables.
- EN 61034-2: Procedures for measuring smoke density of cables during fire.
