Abstract

This part of ISO 14526 specifies the methods of preparation of test specimens and the test methods to be used in
determining the properties of phenolic powder moulding compounds (PF-PMCs). Requirements for handling test
material and for conditioning both the test material before moulding and the specimens before testing are given
here.
Procedures and conditions for the preparation of test specimens and procedures for measuring properties of the
materials from which these specimens are made are given. Properties and test methods which are suitable and
necessary to characterize PMCs are listed.
The properties have been selected from the general test methods in ISO 10350-1. Other test methods in wide use
for, or of particular significance to, PMCs are also included in this part of ISO 14526, as are the designatory
properties found in ISO 14526-1.
In order to obtain reproducible and comparable test results, it is necessary to use the methods of preparation and
conditioning, the specimen dimensions and the test procedures specified herein. Values determined will not
necessarily be identical to those obtained using specimens of different dimensions or prepared using different
procedures.

SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 14526-2:1999 and ISO 14526-2:1999 from SIST/ISO. It covers phenolic powder moulding compounds (PF-PMCs) and specifies how to prepare test specimens and how to determine their properties for comparison, specification and quality control.

What does SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 specify?

SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 specifies specimen preparation, conditioning and test methods for phenolic powder moulding compounds (PF-PMCs). It is the methods part of the series: it tells laboratories how to make comparable specimens and how to measure the properties used to characterize PF-PMCs.

The scope covers handling of test material, conditioning before moulding, conditioning before testing, and the preparation and testing procedures themselves. The document also states that reproducible results depend on using the specimen dimensions, preparation methods and test procedures given here.

The document is organized into:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
  • Clause 4 - Preparation of test specimens
  • Clause 5 - Conditioning of test specimens
  • Clause 6 - Determination of properties
  • Tables 1 to 4 - moulding conditions and property/test-condition lists

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000?

SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 requires a consistent preparation route for each specimen series. In practice, a laboratory has to choose either injection moulding or compression moulding and keep the same procedure and processing conditions for all specimens of a given test programme.

Specimen handling and pretreatment

Clause 4 requires the material to be kept in moisture-proof containers until use. For filled or reinforced materials, the moisture content is expressed as a percentage of the total mass of the compound. This matters because moisture can change moulding behaviour and test results.

Before injection moulding, no pretreatment is normally needed unless the manufacturer recommends it. Before compression moulding, the material may be preformed, dried, high-frequency preheated or preplastified in accordance with ISO 295. This gives laboratories a controlled way to prepare difficult materials.

Moulding conditions

Clause 4 gives separate procedures for injection-moulded and compression-moulded specimens. For injection moulding, the document points to ISO 10724-1 and ISO 10724-2 and gives ranges for melt temperature, mould temperature and injection velocity in Table 1. For compression moulding, it points to ISO 295 and gives ranges for mould temperature, mould pressure and cure time in Table 2.

The key practical point is that each test programme must use definite values, not just ranges, for the selected temperatures, pressure or injection conditions and cure time. The cure time must be the same for all specimens of the same thickness from one material and must be stated with the results. That is what makes the data traceable and comparable.

Conditioning before testing

Clause 5 gives two conditioning methods. Method 1 is the general method: condition the specimens in accordance with ISO 291 for at least 16 h at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity. Method 2 is a water-conditioning route: 24 h in distilled water at ambient temperature, then 2 h under ISO 291 conditions.

In practice, the selected conditioning route can change measured properties such as impact, electrical behaviour or water-related performance, so the chosen method has to match the test purpose and be reported.

Property determination

Clause 6 says that the data presentation rules in ISO 10350-1 apply, and that tests are normally carried out in the standard laboratory atmosphere of (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity unless Tables 3 or 4 state otherwise. This matters because laboratories comparing materials need the same atmosphere and reporting rules.

Table 3 lists the main property groups for PF-PMCs:

  • rheological and processing properties such as moulding shrinkage
  • mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact behaviour
  • thermal properties such as deflection temperature under load, linear thermal expansion and burning behaviour
  • electrical properties such as relative permittivity, dissipation factor, resistivity, electric strength and proof tracking index
  • other properties such as water absorption and density

Table 4 adds properties of practical interest for PF-PMCs, including apparent density, bulk factor, transfer flow, ball indentation hardness, glow-bar flammability, insulation resistance, free ammonia, volatile matter and extractable formaldehyde. These are useful when a buyer, formulator or quality lab needs a wider material profile than the core comparison set.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 define?

PF-PMCs means phenolic powder moulding compounds, the material family covered by the standard.

Thermal flow is the flow behaviour of plasticized thermosetting moulding compounds when filling a mould cavity; the standard notes that the minimum torque measured in accordance with ISO 15062 may be used as a measure of it.

Proof tracking index (PTI) is the tracking resistance property listed in Table 3 for electrical testing.

Glow-bar flammability (BH) is the flammability classification listed in Table 4 for the glow-bar test in IEC 60707.

Bulk factor is the ratio between bulk density and apparent density of the moulding compound, as shown in Table 4.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000?

SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 is used by plastics laboratories, thermoset compound manufacturers, test houses, quality managers and technical buyers who need comparable property data for PF-PMCs. It is also relevant to specifiers working with moulded electrical or structural parts made from thermosetting materials.

In practice, these users apply the document when preparing test plaques or multipurpose specimens, checking incoming compound batches, comparing materials from different suppliers, and generating data for designatory or specification purposes.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 is part of ISO 14526, which the foreword says is a technical revision of ISO 800:1992 after a transition period of up to four years. The foreword also states that ISO 14526 consists of three parts:

  • Part 1 - Designation system and basis for specifications
  • Part 2 - Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties
  • Part 3 - Requirements for selected moulding compounds

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000?

SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 builds on a large set of normative references for specimen preparation, conditioning and property testing. The most directly used ones are:

  • ISO 291 - standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing
  • ISO 295 - compression moulding of test specimens of thermosetting materials
  • ISO 2818 - machining of test specimens
  • ISO 3167 - multipurpose test specimens
  • ISO 10724-1 and ISO 10724-2 - injection moulding of test specimens for PMCs
  • ISO 10350-1 - comparable single-point data and reporting rules
  • ISO 14526-1 - designation system and basis for specifications
  • ISO 14526-3 - requirements for selected moulding compounds

The document also refers to the property standards used for specific measurements, such as ISO 178, ISO 179-1, ISO 527-1, ISO 527-2, ISO 75-2, ISO 1183, ISO 2039-1, ISO 2577, ISO 4589-2, IEC 60093, IEC 60112, IEC 60243-1 and IEC 60707. These references tell the laboratory which established method to use for each property.

What does the SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 document contain?

SIST EN ISO 14526-2:2000 contains the moulding conditions in Tables 1 and 2 and the property lists and test conditions in Tables 3 and 4. Table 1 gives injection moulding parameters, including temperature and velocity ranges; Table 2 gives compression moulding parameters, including temperature, pressure and cure time ranges.

Table 3 is the main comparison table. It pairs each property with the applicable test standard, specimen type, processing route, unit and any special test condition, such as loading rate, notch geometry, voltage, electrode arrangement or ignition method. That makes it usable for a laboratory test plan or a procurement specification.

Table 4 provides additional tests and special-purpose characterization methods. It includes methods for density-related properties, hardness, glow-bar flammability, insulation resistance, free ammonia and extractable formaldehyde, which are useful for product control, formulation work and material qualification.

ISO 14526-2:1999(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 14526 may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 14526-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee
SC 12, Thermosetting materials.
After a transition period of, at the most, four years, the three parts of ISO 14526 (see below) will replace
ISO 800:1992, of which they constitute a technical revision.
ISO 14526 consists of the following parts, under the general title Plastics — Phenolic powder moulding compounds
(PF-PMCs):
Part 1: Designation system and basis for specifications
Part 2: Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties
Part 3: Requirements for selected moulding compounds
