Overview

EN ISO 10298:2020/A1:2022 (ISO 10298:2018/Amd 1:2021) is an amendment to the international standard for gas cylinders that provides authoritative guidance on the determination of toxicity for gases and gas mixtures to support the selection of cylinder valve outlets. The standard compiles best-available acute inhalation toxicity data from the literature so that gases and mixtures can be classified for toxicity by inhalation and appropriate valve outlet types can be selected to reduce handling and exposure risks.

Key topics and requirements

  • Purpose: Use acute-toxicity data to classify gases/gas mixtures by inhalation toxicity for safe cylinder valve outlet selection.
  • Data basis: Best-available LC50 (lethal concentration) values from current literature; emphasis on acute inhalation toxicity.
  • Mixture calculation: Amendment 1 updates the mixture toxicity formula in clause 4.3. The revised formula for estimating the mixture LC50 is:
    • 1/LC50 = Σi (Ci / LC50i)
    • where Ci is the mole fraction of the i‑th toxic component and LC50i is the lethal concentration of that component (applicable when LC50i < 5 000 ppm by volume).
  • Scope limitation: Focused on acute toxicity by inhalation; does not replace other hazard classifications (e.g., flammability, corrosivity).
  • Conformance: CEN adoption means the amendment is implemented as a national standard in CEN member countries.

Practical applications and users

Who uses this standard:

  • Gas cylinder manufacturers and cylinder valve designers selecting outlet connections based on toxicity classification.
  • Industrial gas suppliers and distributors responsible for cylinder filling, labelling and outlet configuration.
  • Safety engineers and occupational health professionals assessing inhalation risks and specifying control measures.
  • Regulators, transport authorities and emergency responders using toxicity classification to inform handling, storage and incident response. Practical uses:
  • Calculating mixture toxicity (LC50) using component mole fractions to determine if a more restrictive valve outlet is required.
  • Informing cylinder labelling, safety data sheets (SDS) and workplace controls based on inhalation hazard classification.
  • Standardizing valve outlet selection across supply chains to reduce cross-connection and accidental releases.

Related standards and committees

  • Based on ISO 10298:2018; Amendment 1 (2021) integrated as EN ISO 10298:2020/A1:2022 by CEN.
  • Developed by ISO/TC 58 (Gas cylinders) and adopted by CEN/TC 23 (Transportable gas cylinders).

Keywords: gas cylinders, toxicity, LC50, cylinder valve outlets, gases and gas mixtures, EN ISO 10298:2020/A1:2022, acute inhalation toxicity, mixture toxicity calculation.
