SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 is the Slovenian standard for quartz filled epoxy resinous compounds used for electrical insulation. It specifies the requirements for these compounds in the cured form for types EP-F-1 to EP-F-7, and it points users to IEC test methods for checking both uncured and cured properties. Engineers, buyers, quality managers and test labs use it to define a material type, agree test conditions and judge whether a supplied compound matches the specified class.
What does SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 specify?
SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 covers quartz filled epoxy resinous compounds for electrical insulation, focusing on the cured form of the material. The standard organizes the requirements around the material types EP-F-1 to EP-F-7, with additional checks for uncured material when a contract asks for them.
The document is arranged in four clauses and Annex ZA:
- Clause 1 - scope
- Clause 2 - normative references
- Clause 3 - requirements
- Clause 4 - special requirements
- Annex ZA - normative references to international publications and their European equivalents
In practice, this means the standard is a product specification sheet, not a general textbook on epoxy resins. It tells a buyer or manufacturer what performance profile to specify and what test standard to use to verify it.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004?
SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 sets one formulation boundary, two groups of property checks, and a type-dependent property profile. The main practical task is to match the compound to the correct EP-F type and to verify it with the test methods named in IEC 60455-2.
Material coverage and composition
Clause 1 limits the sheet to quartz filled epoxy resinous compounds in cured form, for types EP-F-1 to EP-F-7. Clause 3 adds a filler-content requirement for compounds claiming compliance. For users, this means the product claim is not just about generic epoxy resin - it is tied to a quartz-filled cured system and a named type.
Uncured-form checks when a contract calls for them
Clause 4 and Table 1 cover optional tests for the uncured material: viscosity, epoxy equivalent, shelf life, pot life, exothermic temperature peak and total shrinkage. These are used when procurement or qualification needs to control processing behavior before cure. In practice, the contract should state which of these checks are required.
Cured-form property set
Clause 3 and Table 2 define the main acceptance properties for the cured compound. The property set includes density, flexural strength, tensile strength, impact strength, glass transition temperature, temperature of deflection under load, flammability, water absorption, volume resistivity, dissipation factor, permittivity, electric strength, tracking resistance, and thermal endurance. This is the core checklist for material approval, incoming inspection and supplier qualification.
Type-specific performance levels
Table 2 differentiates EP-F-1 through EP-F-7 by their property levels. The types are not identical grades - they are separate material classes with different mechanical, thermal and electrical profiles. That matters when selecting a compound for hotter service conditions, higher mechanical loading or tighter electrical performance.
Test methods and conditions
Table 2 refers to IEC 60455-2 for the test methods, and it also fixes the relevant test conditions for some electrical properties. For the reader, this means results are only comparable when the same method and test conditions are used.
Suitability at other temperatures
Clause 3 notes that materials intended for lower or higher temperature conditions may need additional tests to establish suitability. In practice, a standard qualification is not always enough if the application runs outside the usual temperature range.
What terms does SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 define?
- Cured form - the hardened state of the compound, which is the state covered by the main requirements in Table 2.
- Uncured form - the material before hardening, covered in Table 1 when special properties are specified in the purchase contract.
- EP-F-1 to EP-F-7 - the seven material types covered by the sheet, each with its own property profile.
- Shelf life - the storage period during which the uncured compound remains usable.
- Pot life - the working time after mixing before the uncured compound becomes unfit for processing.
- Exothermic temperature peak - the highest temperature reached during curing because of reaction heat.
- Temperature of deflection under load - the temperature at which a loaded specimen begins to deform enough to show heat resistance.
- Tracking resistance - the ability of the insulation surface to resist conductive paths under electrical stress and contamination.
Who uses SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004?
SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 is used by compound manufacturers, electrical equipment makers, testing laboratories and procurement or quality teams that specify or verify insulating materials. It is useful in product development, supplier approval, incoming inspection and contract specification because it links a material type to defined test methods and property levels. Engineers use it to choose an EP-F type; buyers use it to write material requirements; labs use it to report comparable test results.
What changed in SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 replaces HD 307.3.2 S1:1997. The foreword states that references to HD 307.2 S1:1986 were updated to EN 60455-2:1999, and a new product, EP-F-7, was introduced. It is also described as a technical revision of the earlier IEC edition.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004?
| Publication | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| IEC 60455-2:1998 | The test methods used for the property checks in Tables 1 and 2. |
| EN 60455-2:1999 | The European publication corresponding to IEC 60455-2, referenced in Annex ZA. |
| IEC 60455-1 | The series part for definitions and general requirements. |
| IEC 60455-3 | The series part for specifications for individual materials, which includes this sheet. |
What does the SIST EN 60455-3-2:2004 document contain?
The document contains a scope clause, one normative reference clause, one requirements clause and one special-requirements clause. It uses Table 1 for uncured-form tests and Table 2 for cured-form requirements across the seven EP-F types. Annex ZA gives the normative reference mapping to the corresponding European publication.
It also includes notes that help with practical use, such as the filler-content guidance and the reminder that materials for different temperature ranges may need extra testing.
