(Amendment)Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-42: Particular requirements for commercial electric forced convection ovens, steam cookers and steam-convection ovens
- Abstract
This European Standard deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial forced convection ovens, steam cookers, steam-convection ovens and, exclusive of any other use, steam generators, not intended for household use. The rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral and 480 V for other appliances. Appliances within the scope of this standard are typically used in restaurants, canteens, hospitals and commercial enterprises such as bakeries, butcheries, etc

oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-42:2026/oprA1:2026 is a SIST publication in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety series for commercial electric forced convection ovens, steam cookers and steam-convection ovens. It gives particular safety requirements for these electrically operated appliances, including direct current (DC) supplied appliances, and for steam generators used only in this application. The scope points to use in restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, butcheries and similar commercial enterprises.
What does oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-42:2026/oprA1:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-42:2026/oprA1:2026 is an amendment to the Part 2-42 safety requirements for commercial appliances in the IEC 60335 series. It updates the way the base standard applies to certain power supplies, battery-related cases, door movement and mechanical guarding.
The document is organized as targeted changes to these parts of the base standard:
| Affected clause or annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Clause 1 | Scope |
| Clause 3 | Terms and definitions |
| Clause 11 | Heating |
| Clause 12 | Charging of metal-ion batteries |
| Clause 18 | Endurance |
| Clause 20 | Stability and mechanical hazards |
| Annex B | Battery-operated appliances, separable batteries and detachable batteries |
In practice, this means the amendment is read together with the base Part 2-42 text and used where the listed clauses are revised.
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-42:2026/oprA1:2026?
The most important changes are in the scope, battery treatment, guarding and motorized door safety. These are the parts that affect design reviews, test plans and conformity checks.
- Clause 1 extends the scope to include appliances supplied by DC and removes the battery-operated appliance item from the scope wording. For users, this means DC-fed equipment is now clearly inside the intended application of the part.
- Clause 3.1.9 replaces the earlier wording for one defined term. In practice, readers should use the amended definition when checking the technical meaning of that term anywhere in the document.
- Clause 11.7 replaces the earlier heating text. This matters because heating behavior is a core safety topic for ovens and steam equipment, so the revised paragraph is the one to follow in temperature-related assessment.
- Clause 12 says that the requirements of Part 1 apply to charging of metal-ion batteries. In practice, the special charging text is not in this part, so the general appliance safety rules are used instead.
- Clause 18 says that the Part 1 endurance clause is not applicable. For test labs, that means the general endurance procedure from Part 1 is not used here.
- Clause 20.2 requires protective enclosures, guards and similar parts to be non-detachable or interlocked and to have adequate mechanical strength. This is the construction rule that helps keep users away from hazardous moving or live parts.
- Clause 20.103 adds a hazard check for automatic opening and closing of the door. For motorized doors, the movement must not create a dangerous condition, so the design must control pinch, crush and impact risk during closing.
- Annex B is deleted. That means battery-operated appliances, separable batteries and detachable batteries are no longer treated in a special annex in this part.
Who uses oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-42:2026/oprA1:2026?
oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-42:2026/oprA1:2026 is used by manufacturers, design engineers, test laboratories, certification bodies, quality managers and buyers of commercial kitchen equipment. It is especially relevant for suppliers of ovens, steam cookers, steam-convection ovens and related steam generators.
They use it when designing enclosures and door systems, planning safety tests, reviewing battery-related features, and checking whether equipment intended for food-service and other commercial sites fits the product category.
What changed in oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-42:2026/oprA1:2026 from the previous edition?
This amendment updates IEC 60335-2-42:2021.
- It adds DC supplied appliances to the scope wording.
- It removes the battery-operated appliance item from the scope.
- It replaces the text in Clause 3.1.9 and Clause 11.7.
- It makes Clause 12 refer to Part 1 for charging of metal-ion batteries.
- It states that Clause 18 of Part 1 is not applicable.
- It tightens Clause 20.2 for protective enclosures, guards and similar parts.
- It adds Clause 20.103 for hazards caused by automatic door movement.
- It deletes Annex B.
What does the oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-42:2026/oprA1:2026 document contain?
This amendment contains clause-by-clause replacement text rather than a full rewritten standard. The most concrete test content is in Clause 20.103, which sets a motorized door safety check and uses defined acceptance limits for the closing movement.
Clause 20.2 gives the construction rule for enclosures and guards, while Clause 12 and Annex B reset how battery-related appliances are handled in this part. Clause 1, Clause 3, Clause 11 and Clause 18 are revised to align the base safety text with the new scope and application rules.

preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
