SIST EN 1243:2011 is the Slovenian standard identical to EN 1243:2011, prepared in the CEN system. It specifies a laboratory method for determining the free formaldehyde content of amino and amido-formaldehyde condensate adhesives. The standard is used when a batch needs a measured free formaldehyde result under a common test procedure.

What does SIST EN 1243:2011 specify?

SIST EN 1243:2011 specifies one test method for amino and amido-formaldehyde condensate adhesives. It gives the procedure to turn a controlled chemical reaction and titration into a free formaldehyde result, so laboratories can compare samples in the same way.

The document is organized into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Principle, Reagents, Apparatus, Sampling, Procedure, Expression of results and Test report. That structure matters in practice because it separates the chemistry of the method from the sampling, calculation and reporting steps.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 1243:2011?

Principle

The free formaldehyde in the adhesive reacts with sodium sulphite in the presence of a measured excess of acid, and the remaining acid is then titrated with sodium hydroxide. The buffered system and the low reaction temperature are used to limit hydrolysis and side reactions, so the result reflects the free formaldehyde rather than changes during the test.

Sampling and sample preparation

Sampling is done according to EN ISO 15605, and the sample is homogenized according to EN 1067. For solid adhesives, the standard requires dispersion in water at 50 % m/m and analysis within 2 h, which keeps the sample representative and limits changes before testing.

If the solid adhesive is a formulated type with fillers and acid catalyst, the dispersion is neutralized to pH 7.0 ± 0.2 before the actual analysis. This step matters because the method is based on a controlled acid-sulphite reaction.

Test procedure

The test uses 5 g of liquid adhesive or dispersion, or another mass when the blank difference is too small. The sample is mixed with cooled dimethylsulphoxide solution, held in an ice and water bath, then treated quickly with cooled hydrochloric acid in sodium sulphite.

After 5 min, thymolphthalein is added and the excess acid is titrated immediately with sodium hydroxide to the blue end point. Potentiometric titration is allowed if the temperature and time conditions are respected. In practice, this means the lab must control timing and cooling closely.

Result and report

The free formaldehyde content is calculated from the volumes used for the test and the blank, the sodium hydroxide molarity and the test portion mass. For solid adhesives, the calculation uses half of the test portion because the sample is prepared as a 50 % dispersion.

The test report must identify the standard, the adhesive type and designation, the result, any changes to the procedure, any circumstances that could affect the result, and the test date. This gives a traceable record for quality control or dispute handling.

What terms does SIST EN 1243:2011 define?

Clause 3 defines free formaldehyde as the percentage by mass of unreacted formaldehyde in the product.

Other key terms used in the method are:

  • Significant sample - the sample taken for testing in accordance with EN ISO 15605.
  • Homogenize - prepare the sample so it is uniform before testing.
  • Formulated adhesive - a solid adhesive containing fillers and acid catalyst, treated with a neutralization step before analysis.
  • Blank test - a parallel test carried out without adhesive to correct the result.
  • Potentiometric titration - an alternative titration approach allowed when the timing and temperature conditions are followed.

Who uses SIST EN 1243:2011?

SIST EN 1243:2011 is used by adhesive manufacturers, testing laboratories and quality control staff working with amino and amido-formaldehyde condensate adhesives. It is also useful for buyers and incoming inspection teams who need a standard way to check and compare free formaldehyde results from supplied material.

What changed in SIST EN 1243:2011 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 1243:2011 supersedes EN 1243:1998. The foreword states that the main modifications are in the Foreword, the Normative references and Clause 4.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 1243:2011?

  • EN 923:2005+A1:2008 - provides adhesive terms and definitions used alongside the method.
  • EN 1067 - gives sample examination and preparation rules.
  • EN ISO 1042:1999 - covers one-mark volumetric flasks used in the laboratory work.
  • EN ISO 3696:1995 - specifies grade 3 water for analytical use.
  • EN ISO 15605 - gives the sampling method for adhesives.
  • EN ISO 385:2005 - covers burettes used for titration.
  • ISO 648:2008 - covers single-volume pipettes used in the test setup.

What does the SIST EN 1243:2011 document contain?

The document contains the method basis, the reagent list, apparatus requirements, sampling instructions, the detailed cooled titration procedure, the calculation formula and the test report items. It also states the reaction principle and explains why the acid-sulphite system and low temperature are used. For users, the most practical parts are the sample preparation step, the blank test, and the reporting requirements.
