(Main)Portable equipment for projecting extinguishing agents and firefighting support operations — Hand-held branchpipes for fire service use — Part 4: High pressure branchpipes PN 40
- Abstract
In addition to common the requirements given in EN 15182 1, this document specifies the specific safety and performance requirements and the corresponding test methods, applicable to hand-held high pressure branchpipes (nozzles) with a nominal pressure of 40 bar (4,0 MPa) PN 40, with a maximum flow rate up to 250 l/min at a reference pressure of 6 bar (0,6 MPa).
These branchpipes are used for example for quick attack lines, building fires, forest fires, etc.

oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 is a CEN draft European Standard for hand-held branchpipes used by fire services. It specifies the safety and performance requirements, plus the test methods, for high pressure branchpipes PN 40 with a nominal pressure of 40 bar and a maximum flow rate up to 250 l/min at a reference pressure of 6 bar. It is meant for equipment used in operations such as quick attack lines, building fires, and forest fires.
What does oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 specifies the additional requirements for PN 40 hand-held high pressure branchpipes, on top of the common requirements in EN 15182-1. The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and requirements and verification, with the technical content split between mechanical and hydraulic performance.
Clause 4 is the core of the document. It covers size and mass, operating forces, flow and spray adjustment, hydraulic performance, leak-tightness, and resistance to hydrostatic stress during shut-off.
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026?
oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 requires the branchpipe to comply with EN 15182-1, and its classification must follow EN 15182-1:2026, Annex A. It also states that the tests in this part are type tests, so the document is aimed at design verification rather than routine field checking.
Mechanical requirements
The branchpipe, without the inlet coupling, must stay within the stated envelope and mass limit in Table 1. In practice, this matters for handling, storage, and compatibility with fire service use, especially when crews carry the equipment for long periods.
Operating elements must stay within the torque limits in Table 2 at pressures up to nominal pressure. For detented rotating elements, the required actuation force must stay within the stated range before and after cycling. This is a usability check: the operator must be able to adjust the nozzle safely and predictably while wearing gloves and working under pressure.
Flow selection, where provided, must be identifiable both visually and by touch, and rotating flow adjustment is limited to a maximum 180° movement. The spray positions must also be clearly marked, with a narrow spray jet position that is detectable by sight and touch.
Hydraulic requirements
The document requires flow-rate measurements at both straight jet and maximum spray angle positions. Table 4 sets the allowed deviation from the indicated flow rates. For users, this means the marked settings should correspond closely to the actual water delivery.
The effective throw is measured at straight jet under defined test conditions, including a 30° inclination and low wind speed. The instruction handbook must state the maximum throw, so the user can judge reach in real firefighting conditions.
For type 4 branchpipes, the pressure-control test checks that the operating range is stated and that pressure remains within 30% of the median pressure. The result is to be shown in graphic form as in EN 15182-1:2026, Annex C.
Tightness and strength
The closed branchpipe must show no leakage for 1 minute at 60 bar, and the open branchpipe must show no leakage between inlet and outlet for 1 minute at 40 bar. The hydrostatic test then checks resistance to water hammer by raising pressure in steps up to 100 bar and holding the maximum pressure for 1 minute without rupture.
What terms does oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 define?
- high pressure branchpipe - A branchpipe with a shut-off device and adjustable pattern, with nominal pressure of 40 bar.
- high pressure branchpipe - type 1 - A type where changing the pattern changes the flow at one pressure.
- high pressure branchpipe - type 4 - An automatic pressure branchpipe with an integrated pressure control device.
- narrow spray jet - An intermediate spray position between straight jet and wide spray jet.
- wide spray jet - A jet that provides protection for the operator(s).
- haptical device - A single mechanical device with detents that the user can feel.
- test pressure p_t - The static pressure used for leakage tests.
Who uses oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026?
oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 is used by manufacturers of fire service branchpipes, test laboratories, and technical teams responsible for product verification. It is also relevant to fire and rescue equipment purchasers, quality managers, and conformity assessment bodies that need to compare nozzle design, markings, flow performance, and pressure behaviour against a shared European reference.
What changed in oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 from the previous edition?
oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 will supersede EN 15182-4:2019. The foreword states these main changes: the first part of the title was changed; the scope was rewritten and example uses were added; definitions 3.1.4, 3.1.4.1, and 3.1.4.2 were updated; definition 3.5 was added; the verification in 4.3.4 was updated; the verification in 4.5 was completed; and the wording was improved editorially.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026?
EN 15182-1:2026 supplies the common requirements for hand-held branchpipes and the classification system used for this part. oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 relies on it for the baseline requirements, and also refers to its Annex A for classification and Annex C for the pressure-control graphic format.
What does the oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 document contain?
oSIST prEN 15182-4:2026 contains the tables for size, mass, torque limits, flow deviation, and spray-zone dimensions, together with the figures used for spray-angle measurement and effective-throw testing. It also gives the test conditions for flow, spray pattern, leak-tightness, pressure control, and hydrostatic behaviour. In practice, this makes the document useful for design verification, type testing, and acceptance of PN 40 hand-held branchpipes.
