Overview

SIST EN ISO 25119-1:2023/A1:2023 is an important amendment to the international standard focused on tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry. It covers the safety-related parts of control systems, specifically addressing the general principles for design and development. This amendment updates the earlier ISO 25119-1:2018 standard to refine and improve safety guidance in agricultural and forestry machinery control system design.

Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and endorsed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this standard ensures alignment with the latest safety requirements and technological advancements. It acts as a fundamental reference for manufacturers, developers, and regulatory bodies to enhance machinery safety and compliance.

Key Topics

  • Safety-related control systems: EN ISO 25119-1:2023/A1 applies to control systems in tractors and forestry machinery whose failure or malfunction could result in hazardous situations.
  • Design and development principles: The amendment updates normative references and harmonizes terminology to guide risk assessment, system architecture, and implementation of safety functions.
  • Normative references updates: It replaces older citations of related ISO 25119 parts with their amended versions, ensuring all cross-references are current and consistent.
  • Systematic risk management: Emphasizes integrating functional safety in control system design by identifying hazards, specifying safety requirements, and validating implementations.
  • International collaboration: Produced under ISO/TC 23 and adopted by CEN/TC 144, demonstrating broad European and global commitment to standardizing machinery safety.
  • Compliance with regulations: Supports essential requirements of EU directives and regulations related to agricultural machinery safety, helping manufacturers meet legal obligations.

Applications

This amended standard has practical applications across the agriculture and forestry sectors, including:

  • Machinery manufacturers: Facilitates the design of safer tractors and forestry equipment by providing clear safety-related control system requirements.
  • Control system developers: Offers guidance on building compliant, reliable safety functions and integrating them into electronic and hydraulic control systems.
  • Certification and testing bodies: Acts as a benchmark for assessing safety-related components and validating design processes before market release.
  • Regulatory compliance: Assists stakeholders in meeting mandatory safety directives within the European Union and worldwide, ensuring legal market access.
  • Risk assessment processes: Serves in the identification and mitigation of control system hazards, reducing risks of accidents and failures.
  • Agricultural technology advancement: Encourages implementation of advanced safety controls in precision farming and forestry machinery to safeguard operators and the environment.

Related Standards

SIST EN ISO 25119-1:2023/A1:2023 is part of the broader ISO 25119 series dedicated to safety-related parts of control systems in agricultural and forestry machinery. Key related standards include:

  • ISO 25119-2:2019 – Safety requirements for the conceptual design and overall system design.
  • ISO 25119-3:2018 and ISO 25119-3:2018/Amd 1:2020 – Concern detailed hardware and software requirements.
  • ISO 25119-4:2018 and ISO 25119-4:2018/Amd 1:2020 – Focus on the validation and verification processes for these control systems.

These collectively provide a comprehensive framework for controlling safety in agricultural machinery, covering lifecycle phases from design through validation and maintenance.

Implementing SIST EN ISO 25119-1:2023/A1:2023 ensures enhanced safety, regulatory compliance, and technological robustness for tractors and forestry machinery control systems. It remains a critical resource for manufacturers, developers, testing agencies, and regulators committed to advancing agricultural and forestry equipment safety standards.
