General Information
Overview
SIST EN 16057:2012 is a European Standard established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that specifies a test method for determining the amount of residual surface lead (Pb) on metallic materials, specifically copper alloys containing lead. This standard is critical for assessing the influence of metallic materials on water intended for human consumption, commonly known as drinking water. The presence of lead films on the inner surfaces of products that come into contact with drinking water can lead to lead contamination, particularly in the initial weeks of product use. SIST EN 16057:2012 provides a reliable extraction method to quantify residual lead on these surfaces, helping manufacturers and laboratories ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
The standard addresses the determination of lead films formed on the surface of lead-containing copper alloys which may affect drinking water quality through short-term lead release.Test Specimens
Two types of specimens are defined:- Method-Control-Sample (MCS): A standard specimen made from copper alloy CW614N with a defined lead content and geometry for verifying the testing method.
- Process Sample (PS): Manufactured under the same process as the final product to assess the efficiency of lead removal or minimization during production.
Test Solution and Reagents
The method uses a freshly prepared test solution containing sulphamidic acid and tetrafluoroboric acid, applied under controlled shaking conditions to dissolve and extract surface lead.Extraction Procedure
The test involves repeated extraction and analysis of lead content from the test specimen’s surface over ten cycles to calculate the total mass of residual surface lead.Quality Control
The method-control-sample (MCS) is used regularly to verify the effectiveness of the extraction method, ensuring consistent and accurate results.Analytical Requirements and Reporting
Detailed guidelines are provided for preparing specimens, performing tests, controlling method parameters, and reporting results for traceability and regulatory compliance.
Applications
Water Supply and Drinking Water Safety
SIST EN 16057:2012 is essential for water utilities and regulatory bodies to ensure that metallic components used in water supply systems do not contribute excessive lead to drinking water.Manufacturing Process Control
Metal manufacturers and product fabricators use this standard to monitor and optimize production processes that influence lead contamination risk from surface films.Compliance with Drinking Water Directives
Enables conformity with European and national regulations on lead levels in products intended to contact drinking water, supporting public health protection.Quality Assurance in Copper Alloy Products
The method assists in verifying that copper alloy products meet stringent lead release criteria during early product life stages, minimizing consumer exposure.
Related Standards

The lead release from the bulk material is not affected by the lead film on the surface and depends on the composition of the material. The bulk material can release lead for a long period (long term behaviour). It is possible to test materials for their lead release from the bulk material (EN 15664-1 and -2), so that products made of approved materials do not have to be tested for this characteristic. As the lead films on the surface depend on the individual manufacturing process, it is necessary to test the products or the manufacturing process. This test method is intended to be used as a process control method to assess the presence of lead films on the inner surface of products intended to come in contact with drinking water or to assess the efficiency of a manufacturing process to remove or minimise surface Pb, e.g. washing process to remove lead on surfaces. The implementation of an audit controlled process monitoring is an effective w
