User information and warnings
Clause 7 strengthens the instructions that must accompany the appliance. The front cover has to carry a clear caution to read the instructions before use, or equivalent symbols. In practice, this means the user information must be prominent before the appliance is put into service.
Clause 7 also expands the safety text for people with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities and for users who need supervision or instruction. The instructions must state the intended use, safe operation and maintenance, training needs for operators, and how to act after an accident or breakdown. For the reader, this is the material that supports safe installation, training and day-to-day operation.
The instructions must also cover stability conditions, protective measures during adjustment and maintenance, the use of personal protective equipment when hot foodstuff may spread, a warning about slippery floors near the appliance, and the maximum weight of the empty appliance. For table-top appliances, the instructions have to specify that a support is needed so the working height is between 695 mm and 980 mm.
Repairs have to be carried out by competent persons. That matters because the appliance is not treated as user-serviceable for all repair tasks.
Construction and ergonomics
Clause 22 adds ergonomic requirements and lid safety requirements. Lids that are not motorized need at least one handle, and the handle arrangement has to help prevent scalding by steam when the lid is opened. The requirement is met by features such as a click stop hinge, counterbalanced lid, or an opening angle of at least 100°.
Clause 22 also sets an ergonomic working height for the hob between 695 mm and 980 mm. Controls must be mounted at a minimum height of 350 mm, clearly visible and identifiable, within easy reach, and protected against accidental actuation when that could create a hazard. For design and procurement teams, these are practical layout limits that affect the appliance footprint and user interface.
Filling and draining taps, if present, must be designed so they cannot be opened accidentally. The document gives inspection and manual test as the checks. In practice, that pushes the design toward deliberate, secure valve operation.
Hygiene and power-driven parts
Annex ZAA adds hygiene requirements. It introduces a categorization of food area, splash area and non-food area, and it tightens surface, joint, cleaning and maintenance expectations. Ventilation openings have to be in the non-food area and must not direct air toward the food area unless they are directly needed for food processing.
Several hygiene requirements are linked to whether the appliance operates below or above 82 °C, and some are waived when the appliance reaches 82 °C or more during normal operation. The instruction handbook must also describe special utensils or accessories needed for cleaning, and it must warn against accessories that could damage surfaces. For a buyer or quality manager, this is the part to check when assessing cleanability and hygiene support.
Annex ZE adds requirements for appliances with power driven moving parts. It limits the intended-use wording to experts, trained users or declared commercial use by lay persons, and it requires product information to reflect the reasonably foreseeable use of the appliance. It also includes a guard endurance test of 5 000 cycles at 5 cycles per minute when the guard is opened to operate the interlocking device.
The amendment also introduces a noise statement for these appliances: the A-weighted emission sound pressure level is stated as equal to or less than 70 dB(A). That gives users and purchasers a defined noise-related declaration to check in the product information.
