Overview

SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006 specifies the framework for environmental conditions and environmental tests for telecommunications equipment, produced by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and fully aligned with European standards. This standard establishes requirements for test severities and verification methods to ensure telecommunications equipment can withstand storage, transportation, and operational environments, as classified in Part 1 of the EN 300 019 series. As an introduction to Part 2, it outlines the principles behind selecting environmental classes, related test philosophies, and how these align with industry practices for equipment reliability and environmental engineering.

Key Topics

  • Environmental Test Specification: Outlines the recommended severities and procedures for testing telecommunications equipment under various environmental classes and conditions.
  • Test Philosophy: Focuses on simulating the effects of environmental conditions rather than reproducing them precisely, allowing for standardized, repeatable testing.
  • In-use versus Not in-use States: Differentiates between equipment tests performed during operational states and those for equipment in storage or transit.
  • Test Programme Development: Offers guidance on developing effective test sequences and verifying environmental resistibility, crucial for product compliance with market requirements.
  • Resistibility Requirements: Details on how environmental class requirements ensure products remain robust throughout their lifecycle, including during storage, transit, and operation.
  • Verification and Performance Assessment: Criteria for verifying that equipment meets required environmental resistibility, including failure conditions and acceptable performance degradation.
  • Reference Framework: Integrates international standards, such as IEC 60068, to maintain consistency in environmental testing approaches.

Applications

SIST EN 300 019-2-0 is essential across the telecommunications sector for:

  • Product Development: Assists manufacturers in designing telecom equipment that meets specific environmental resistibility requirements, ensuring reliability in varying climates and operational settings.
  • Quality Assurance: Provides a basis for environmental test programs, helping companies validate the durability of their products throughout shipping, storage, and use phases.
  • Market Compliance: Ensures equipment fulfills European and international environmental testing standards, which is a prerequisite for market entry and regulatory compliance.
  • Procurement and Tendering: Enables purchasers and network operators to specify environmental resistance performance for their telecom infrastructure and devices.
  • Lifecycle Management: Guides organizations in anticipating environmental risks during storage and transportation, reducing potential for early failure and maintenance costs.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to environmental testing of telecommunications equipment, the following standards are closely associated:

  • EN 300 019-1 Series: Classification of environmental conditions (climatic, mechanical, chemical, and biological) for telecom equipment during storage, transportation, and use.
  • EN 300 019-2 Series: Detailed specifications for environmental tests based on equipment lifecycle and placement, including specific conditions for storage, transportation, and operational use.
  • ETSI TR 100 035: Provides guidance and terminology for environmental engineering, supporting all parts of the EN 300 019 series.
  • IEC 60068: Standard series for environmental testing methods, widely referenced for test method consistency and international compatibility.
  • IEC 60721-2-4: Addresses solar radiation and temperature for equipment in natural environmental conditions.

Keywords: environmental engineering, environmental testing, telecommunications equipment, test specification, resistibility, EN 300 019, IEC 60068, verification methods, quality assurance, electronics compliance, environmental classes.

By implementing the guidelines and specifications provided in SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006, organizations can ensure robust, reliable telecommunications products capable of performing in diverse and challenging environments.

4 General
The purpose of environmental testing is to demonstrate that an equipment under defined environmental conditions can
survive without irreversible failures and perform according to requirements.
These tests are not reliability tests or lifetime tests.
The severities of testing in EN 300 019-2-1 to 2-8 [3] are closely correlated with the characteristic severities of the
environmental classes in EN 300 019-1-1 to 1-8 [2]. The transformation has been made taking into account failure
consequences, performance requirements and the graded test severities in IEC 60068-2 [5] test methods. In
EN 300 019-2-1 to 2-8 [3], "moderate failure consequences" and "normal performance requirements" sha
