This document specifies functional requirements (see Clause 5) and safety requirements (see Clause 6) for table tennis tables hereafter referred to as tables.
This document is applicable to five types of tables (see Table 2) within the Classes A to D (see Table 1).

Foreword
This document (EN 14468-1:2004) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN /TC 136, “Sports, playground
and other recreational equipment”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or
by endorsement, at the latest by June 2005, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by
June 2005.

1 Scope
This document specifies functional requirements (see Clause 5) and safety requirements (see Clause 6) for table
tennis tables hereafter referred to as tables.
This document is applicable to five types of tables (see Table 2) within the Classes A to D (see Table 1).
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references,
only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any
amendments) applies.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

complete equipment without net assembly
3.2
tabletop
half of a table (including the playing board, the finish and lines of the playing surface, the frames and other rein-
forcements under the board especially around its end and side, the markings on the frames and any device holding
or attaching together both halves) divided at the net without any undercarriage

full tabletop
two tabletops assembled in the playing position
3.4
undercarriage
all of the elements whose principal function is to support the tabletop

playing position
both tabletops are in a horizontal position with net assembly attached
3.6
playback position
one tabletop is in a horizontal and the other one in a vertical position with the net assembly attached

storage position
both tabletops are in a vertical position

4 Classification
Tables are grouped by the intended end-use (classes) and the design (types) as shown in Tables 1 and 2. Figure 6
shows the component parts of the table.

5.2 Weight
Where the table weight exceeds 200 kg, the table should be carried using a lifting device. A notice should be put on
the underside of the table and on the outer packaging.
5.3 Playing surface
5.3.1 Material
Any material that fulfils the requirements of this document can be used.
5.3.2 Flatness
The flatness tolerances for half the playing surface shall be:
Class A  4 mm;
Class B  7 mm;
Class C 10 mm;
Class D 15 mm.
Testing in accordance with 7.2.
5.3.3 Colour of playing surface
1)
Classes A, B: Green or blue, of any degree of darkness having a Y-value under illuminant D65 of not more
  than 30 % (CIE system).
  The colour of lines for Classes A and B shall be white.
Classes C, D: Optional.
5.3.4 Degree of gloss and regularity
The plain surface including the lines shall be matt. The finish shall be uniform, even and smooth and not colouring
the ball.
When tested in accordance with 7.3, the following gloss values shall be achieved:
Classes A, B: gloss value ≤ 15;
Classes C, D: gloss value ≤ 24.
5.3.5 Ball bounce
The standards in accordance with Table 4 shall be achieved when the 40 mm ball is dropped without spin from a
height of 300 mm on prefixed points as well as on special points.
The bounces are measured and the average and medium bounces are calculated in accordance with 7.4.

5.3.6 Side and ends of the tabletop
5.3.6.1 Edges
The playing surface shall have rectangular but not sharp edges, all the other edges shall be blunt. If there is a side
protection for Class A the side of the playing top shall be covered with a max. thickness of 1 mm.
5.3.6.2 Frame reinforcements
The height of the frame reinforcement plus the top may be no more than 100 mm (see Figure 7). The thickness of
the lower frame shall be ≥ 3 mm and the edge of the frame has to be rounded with a radius of min. 1 mm. The
frame of Class A shall be flush with the side edge of the tabletop.
