Overview

kSIST FprEN 1428:2026 - Bitumens and bituminous binders - Determination of water content in bituminous emulsions - Azeotropic distillation method - specifies an analytical procedure for accurately determining the water content in bituminous emulsions using the azeotropic distillation method. This standard, prepared under the authority of SIST and CEN/TC 336, is intended for laboratories and professionals in the construction and materials industry, supporting quality assurance, product specification, and regulatory compliance for bituminous binders and emulsions.

The azeotropic distillation method is widely recognized for its reliability and precision in measuring water content, which is a critical parameter in evaluating the performance and durability of bituminous products. This standard supersedes EN 1428:2012, introducing refined requirements for solvents, apparatus settings, and procedural verification to enhance repeatability and reproducibility.

Keywords: bitumens, bituminous binders, bituminous emulsions, water content determination, azeotropic distillation, laboratory testing, SIST standard, European Norms, quality control.

Key Topics

  • Purpose: Provides a standardized method for determining the water content in bituminous emulsions via azeotropic distillation.
  • Method Principle: Water is separated from the emulsion by distillation with a water-immiscible solvent (such as toluene or xylene). The condensed distillate is collected and measured in a calibrated receiver.
  • Safety: The procedure involves hazardous materials and operations. Users must implement proper safety and health measures, adhering to relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Required Equipment and Materials:
    • Laboratory glassware (flask, condenser, receiver)
    • Solvent-carrier liquids (toluene as reference, xylene for routine use)
    • Balance with high accuracy (maximum permissible error of 0.05 g)
    • Distillation regulator (e.g., anti-bumping granules)
    • Clean, dry laboratory conditions
  • Sample Preparation and Procedure:
    • Samples must be collected and prepared in accordance with related standards like EN 58 and EN 12594.
    • The sample mass is calculated to ensure optimal distillation performance.
    • The apparatus must be routinely verified for accuracy, especially when new or if results are questionable.
  • Results and Reporting:
    • Water content is expressed as a mass percentage.
    • Testing includes repeatability and reproducibility criteria to ensure data integrity.
    • Test reports must reference the standard, detailing sample identification, procedure specifics, results, and any deviations.

Applications

  • Quality Assurance and Control: Ensures the correct water content in bituminous emulsions, essential for consistent product performance in road construction and waterproofing applications.
  • Specification Compliance: Provides a reliable basis for compliance with technical specifications and procurement requirements in the construction industry.
  • Material Testing Laboratories: Facilitates standardized laboratory procedures to deliver repeatable and reproducible results across different facilities.
  • Research and Development: Supports product development, process optimization, and investigative studies involving bituminous materials.
  • Regulatory and Certification Bodies: Underpins conformity assessment and certification processes for bituminous emulsions.

Related Standards

  • EN 58: Bitumen and bituminous binders - Sampling bituminous binders
  • EN 12594: Bitumens and bituminous binders - Preparation of test samples
  • EN 12597: Bitumens and bituminous binders - Terminology
  • EN ISO 12937: Petroleum products - Determination of water - Coulometric Karl Fischer titration method
  • EN ISO 3696: Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods

By implementing kSIST FprEN 1428:2026, stakeholders ensure reliable, reproducible, and industry-aligned results for water determination in bituminous emulsions, supporting both quality management and regulatory requirements in infrastructure projects.
