General Information

Abstract

EN 300 220-1 covers a wide range of telecommunication, telemetry and generic non-speech applications, such as alarm systems, identification, detection, remote control etc., in the frequency band 25 - 1000 MHz with power levels up to 500 mW.  The work programme is requested to take into account the comments received at the Vote stage of the  EN 300 220-1 which were considered as Technical comments rather then Editorial and therefore could not be considered.  In addition comments have been received on the definition of the Duty Cycle and clarification may be necessary.  Similarly, for wideband equipment (subclause 8.6) an investigation has been requested into the suitability of the stated value for maximum frequency error, currently defined as shall not exceed 10% of the assigned band or wideband channel. Based on the completion of the above investigations, if necessary, an amendment to the published EN 300 220-1 will be prepared for approval for publication.

Overview

SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 is a European standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligns with ETSI’s specification for ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Radio Spectrum Matters (ERM). This part of the standard addresses Short Range Devices (SRD) operating in the 25 MHz to 1 000 MHz frequency range with power levels up to 500 mW. It details supplementary parameters for radio equipment used in a wide array of applications, such as alarm systems, identification, detection, remote control, and various telemetry tasks.

Unlike its companion document, EN 300 220-1, this part focuses on performance parameters not intended for regulatory conformity, but meant to guide manufacturers and users towards reliable operation of SRD radio links and receivers.

Key Topics

  • Frequency Range and Applications: Covers SRD radio equipment from 25 MHz to 1 000 MHz, up to 500 mW power output, supporting both voice and non-voice communications.
  • Receiver Parameters (for non-conformity guidance):
    • Maximum usable sensitivity (conducted and radiated)
    • Co-channel rejection
    • Adjacent channel selectivity
    • Spurious response rejection
    • Intermodulation response rejection
    • Blocking or desensitization
  • Clarification of Duty Cycle: Considerations for how often a device may transmit, which impacts interference mitigation and spectrum efficiency.
  • Special Applications: Supplementary specifications for social alarm systems, including power classification and installation environment considerations.
  • Measurement Methods: Guidance on referencing appropriate test methods from related standards for accurate assessment of SRD performance.

Applications

The standard is vital for manufacturers, designers, and integrators of short range radio devices used in:

  • Alarm systems: Ensuring reliable communication between sensors and control panels in residential and commercial environments.
  • Identification and detection: Facilitating device identification and tracking through RF technologies.
  • Remote control: Wireless control of devices, such as garage doors, lighting, and industrial equipment.
  • Telemetry and telecommand: Collection and transmission of data from remote sensors or control signals for various non-speech applications.

By adhering to the outlined supplementary parameters, developers can enhance the robustness and interoperability of SRD equipment. These parameters help organizations evaluate product performance beyond the minimum regulatory requirements, optimizing system reliability in diverse operational environments.

Related Standards

To achieve full compliance and best practice in SRD implementation, consider the following related standards:

  • EN 300 220-1: Covers technical characteristics and test methods for SRDs in the same frequency range; forms the foundation for conformity and regulatory testing.
  • CEPT/ERC Recommendation 70-03: Outlines the common European frequency allocation and use for SRDs.
  • EN 300 113-1 & EN 300 390-1: Specify technical characteristics and test conditions for land mobile services, useful when the SRD device falls into specific application areas.
  • ITU-T Recommendation O.41: Details psophometric weighting networks used in noise and distortion measurements.
  • ETSI ETR 027: Provides methods of measurement for private mobile radio equipment.

SIST EN 300 220-2 V1.3.1:2003 is an essential reference for anyone aiming to design or implement short range radio devices with high reliability, helping to ensure optimal functionality in both everyday and mission-critical applications.
