This European Standard specifies a method for determining the resistance of chemical protective clothing to penetration by sprays of liquid chemicals.  This European Standard is applicable to clothing which may comprise one or more items and which is intended to be worn when there is risk of exposure to slight splashes of a liquid chemical or to spray particles that coalesce and run off the surface of the garment.  This European Standard is applicable to clothing which is intended to be resistant to penetration under conditions which usually require total body surface cover, but do not demand the wearing of gas-tight clothing.   This European Standard is not applicable to the permeation of liquid chemicals through the materials from which the clothing is made.

Diese Norm legt Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Beständigkeit von Chemikalienschutzkleidung gegen das Durchdringen von Sprays aus flüssigen Chemikalien in zwei verschiedenen Intensitätsstufen fest:
a)   Verfahren A -   Spray-Test mit geringer Intensität: der Spray-Test mit geringer Intensität gilt für Kleidung, die die gesamte Körperoberfläche bedeckt und für das Tragen unter Bedingungen vorgesehen ist, bei denen das Risiko besteht, geringen Mengen eines Sprays oder zufälligen Spritzern mit geringem Volumen einer flüssigen Chemikalie ausgesetzt zu sein.
b)   Verfahren B -   Spray-Test mit hoher Intensität: der Spray-Test mit hoher Intensität gilt für Kleidung mit spraydichten Verbindungen zwischen verschiedenen Teilen der Kleidung und, sofern zutreffend, zwischen der Kleidung und anderen Gegenständen persönlicher Schutzausrüstung, die für das Tragen unter Bedingungen vorgesehen ist, bei denen das Risiko besteht, flüssigen Spray-Partikeln ausgesetzt zu sein.
Diese Norm gilt nicht für die Beständigkeit gegen Permeation von Chemikalien durch Materialien, aus denen die Chemikalienschutzkleidung hergestellt ist, da diese in anderen Normen festgelegt sind.

L'ISO 17491-4:2008 spécifie les méthodes pour la détermination de la résistance des vêtements de protection à la pénétration par brouillard de produits chimiques liquides à deux niveaux différents d'intensité:
Méthode A: essai au brouillard de faible intensité. L'essai au brouillard de faible niveau s'applique aux vêtements qui couvrent l'intégralité du corps, prévus pour être portés dans des conditions qui présentent un risque d'exposition à de faibles quantités d'un produit chimique liquide projetées sous forme d'un brouillard ou à des projections accidentelles de faibles volumes d'un produit chimique liquide.
Méthode B: essai au brouillard d'intensité élevée. L'essai au brouillard de niveau élevé s'applique aux vêtements munis de coutures étanches au brouillard entre les différentes parties du vêtement et, le cas échéant, entre le vêtement et les autres équipements de protection individuelle, qui couvrent l'intégralité du corps et prévus pour être portés dans des conditions qui présentent un risque d'exposition à des particules de liquide pulvérisées.

Ta evropski standard določa metodo ugotavljanja odpornosti varovalnih oblek, ki varujejo pred kemikalijami, proti penetraciji tekočih kemikalij z razprševanjem.  Ta evropski standard se uporablja za obleke, ki so lahko sestavljene iz enega kosa ali iz več delov in so namenjene nošenju v primeru obstoja tveganja izpostavljenosti manjšim brizgom tekoče kemikalije ali razpršenih delcev, ki se združijo ter odtečejo s površine oblačila.  Ta evropski standard se uporablja za obleke, ki naj bi bile odporne proti penetraciji v pogojih, ki običajno zahtevajo pokritje celotne površine telesa, vendar ne zahtevajo nošenja oblačil, ki ne prepuščajo plinov.   Ta evropski standard se ne uporablja za prepustnost tekočih kemikalij skozi materiale, iz katerih je izdelana obleka.

This document (EN ISO 17491-4:2008) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 162 "Protective
clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets", the secretariat of which is held by DIN, in
collaboration with Technical Committee ISO/TC 94 "Personal safety - Protective clothing and equipment".
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by February 2009, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn
at the latest by February 2009.

Relationship between this part of ISO 17491 and the Essential
Requirements of EU Directive 89/686/EEC Personal Protective Equipment
This part of ISO 17491 has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and
the European Free Trade Association to provide one means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the
New Approach Directive 89/686/EEC.

Once this part of ISO 17491 is cited in the Official Journal of the European Communities under that Directive
and has been implemented as a national standard in at least one Member State, compliance with the
normative clauses of this standard, together with the relevant requirements given in the product standards,
confers, within the limits of the scope of both standards, a presumption of conformity with the Essential
Requirements of Directive 89/686/EEC Personal Protective Equipment, Annex II, Clause 3.10.2.

WARNING — Other requirements and other EU Directives may be applicable to the product(s) falling within
the scope of this standard.

CEN/TC 162, Protective clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets, in collaboration with
Technical Committee ISO/TC 94, Personal safety — Protective clothing and equipment, Subcommittee SC 13,
Protective clothing, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN
(Vienna Agreement).
This first edition of ISO 17491-4, together with ISO 17491-3, cancels and replaces ISO 17491:2002,
Clauses 6 and 7 of which have been technically revised.
ISO 17491 consists of the following parts, under the general title Protective clothing — Test methods for
clothing providing protection against chemicals:
⎯ Part 3: Determination of resistance to penetration by a jet of liquid (jet test)
⎯ Part 4: Determination of resistance to penetration by a spray of liquid (spray test)
The following parts are under development:
⎯ Part 1: Determination of resistance to outward leakage of gases (internal pressure test)
⎯ Part 2: Determination of resistance to inward leakage of aerosols and gases (inward leakage test)

Introduction
This part of ISO 17491 describes a test method for determining the spray penetration resistance of chemical
protective clothing Type 4 (with spray-tight connections between different parts of the clothing and, if
applicable, between the clothing and other items of personal protective equipment) and Type 6 (limited
performance protective clothing).
Such clothing comprises one or more items covering the full surface of the body and is intended to be worn
under conditions where there is a risk of exposure to a spray of a liquid chemical. Other requirements with
regard to this type of clothing and its constituent materials can be found in the respective product standards
(see Bibliography [4]).
Interlaboratory testing has shown that this test method is a repeatable pass/fail method.
A document on the selection, use and maintenance of chemical protective clothing is available
(see Bibliography [5]).
CAUTION — Some of the procedures specified in this part of ISO 17491 involve the use of processes
which could lead to hazardous situations and hence appropriate precautions should be taken.

1 Scope
This part of ISO 17491 specifies methods for determining the resistance of chemical protective clothing to
penetration by sprays of liquid chemicals at two different levels of intensity:
a) Method A: low-level spray test. This is applicable to clothing that covers the full body surface and is
intended to be worn when there is a potential risk of exposure to small quantities of spray or accidental
low-volume splashes of a liquid chemical.
b) Method B: high-level spray test. This is applicable to clothing with spray-tight connections between
different parts of the clothing and, if applicable, between the clothing and other items of personal
protective equipment, which covers the full body surface and which is intended to be worn when there is a
risk of exposure to sprayed particles of liquid.
This part of ISO 17491 does not address chemical permeation resistance of the materials from which the
chemical protective clothing is made.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

ISO 17491-4 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 94, Personal safety - Protective clothing and
equipment, Subcommittee SC 13, and by Technical Committee CEN/TC 162, Protective clothing including
hand and arm protection and livejackets in collaboration.
This edition of EN ISO 17491-4 cancels and replaces the first edition EN 468:1994 and the first edition ISO
17491:2002, clause 7, which have been technically revised.
ISO 17491 consists of the following parts, under the general title Protective clothing - Test method for
protective clothing against chemicals:
⎯ Part 1: Internal pressure test
⎯ Part 2: Aerosol and gaseous inward leakage test
⎯ Part 3: Determination of resistance to penetration by a jet of liquid (Jet Test)
⎯ Part 4: Determination of resistance to penetration by a spray of liquid (spray test)

Introduction
This standard describes a test method for determining the spray penetration resistance of chemical protective
clothing Type 4 (with spray-tight connections between different parts of the clothing and, if applicable,
between the clothing and other items of personal protective equipment) and Type 6 (limited performance
protective clothing).
Such clothing comprises one or more items covering the full surface of the body and is intended to be worn
under conditions where there is a risk of exposure to a spray of a liquid chemical.
Other requirements with regard to this type of clothing and its constituent materials can be found in the
respective product standards EN 14605 and EN 13034.
A document on the selection, use and maintenance of chemical protective clothing is in preparation
(prCEN/TR 15419).

protection against chemicals —
Part 4:
Determination of resistance to penetration by a spray of liquid
(spray test)
1 Scope
This standard specifies methods for determining the resistance of chemical protective clothing to penetration
by sprays of liquid chemicals at two different levels of intensity:
a) Method A - low level spray test: the low level spray test is applicable to clothing which covers the full
body surface and which is intended to be worn when there is a potential risk of exposure to small
quantities of spray or accidental low volume splashes of a liquid chemical.
b) Method B - high level spray test: the high level spray test is applicable to clothing with spray-tight
connections between different parts of the clothing and, if applicable, between the clothing and other
items of personal protective equipment, which covers the full body surface and which is intended to be
worn when there is a risk of exposure to sprayed particles of liquid.
This standard does not address chemical permeation resistance of the materials from which the chemical
protective clothing is made as this is specified in other standards.
