Overview
EN IEC 62037-6:2022/A1:2026 (Amendment 1) is an update to the international standard for passive RF and microwave devices - intermodulation level measurement, specifically addressing the measurement of passive intermodulation (PIM) in antennas. Prepared by IEC TC 46 and adopted by CLC, this amendment clarifies antenna mounting guidance and strengthens reporting requirements for dynamic PIM testing. The document supports consistent PIM measurement practices for RF and microwave antenna systems and field installations.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Focused on measurement procedures and reporting for passive intermodulation in antennas (Part 6 of IEC 62037).
- Antenna mounting considerations: Clarifies placement guidance to reduce PIM generation - antennas should be positioned away from neighbouring sources of interference (tower structures, nearby antennas, buildings, walls, aircraft fuselage, spacecraft platforms, etc.) to minimize contact, reflection and nonlinear interactions.
- Dynamic PIM measurement methodology:
- Test reports must document type, description and conditions of the test.
- Reports must include the maximum PIM values measured prior to, during, and after each dynamic test.
- If PIM cannot be measured during the stress event, the standard requires comparison of results before and after the test sequence.
- Traceability and conformity: Amendment aligns with IEC processes and highlights the need to reference normative documents and patent considerations where applicable.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Antenna manufacturers - to design and validate antennas with low passive intermodulation.
- Telecom network operators and RF engineers - for acceptance testing, site commissioning and troubleshooting PIM-related performance issues in cellular, microwave backhaul and satellite ground systems.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies - to apply standardized dynamic and static PIM measurement procedures and produce repeatable test reports.
- Field installers and maintenance teams - to apply mounting best practices that reduce PIM risks in real-world installations.
- EMC and system integrators - to ensure system-level intermodulation performance and mitigate interference in dense RF environments.
Related Standards
- This amendment is part of the IEC 62037 series on intermodulation level measurement. Readers should consult the main EN/IEC 62037-6 text and other parts of IEC 62037 for full measurement methods, normative references and broader PIM guidance.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for th
