Overview

EN 764-5:2014 - Pressure equipment: Inspection documentation of metallic materials and compliance with the material specification is a CEN European Standard that sets out the documentation and verification routes required to demonstrate that metallic materials used in pressure equipment conform to the required material specification. It is intended for use under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) to meet Essential Safety Requirements 4.2(b) and 4.3 of Annex I. The standard defines traceability, required inspection document levels, and routes for material verification (quality management system route or direct inspection route).

Key Topics

  • Scope and purpose - Applies to metallic materials for pressure-bearing parts and attachments; includes a simplified diagram (Figure 1) showing required inspection document routes.
  • Classification by PED category - Materials for main pressure-bearing parts are treated according to equipment categories I–IV; required documentation depends on category.
  • Inspection document levels (EN 10204) - Minimum document levels specified:
    • Type 2.1 (declaration of compliance) for some non-pressure parts
    • Type 2.2 (test report) for category I materials, welding consumables, and other specified parts
    • Type 3.1 (inspection certificate issued by manufacturer and independently verified) for materials under certified QMS
  • Two verification routes
    • Material manufacturer Quality Management System (QMS) route - Requires an accredited competent body to assess and periodically audit the manufacturer’s QMS; scope, production processes and statistical capability are reviewed.
    • Direct inspection route - For production without QMS coverage; includes first production testing, inspector roles and material verification testing.
  • First production and special procedures - Annex A addresses first production testing for materials covered by harmonized standards or EAM (European Approval of Material).
  • Other provisions - Requirements for stockist material, cut-off pieces, welding consumables, component-specific rules (welding procedures, NDT of joints).

Applications

  • Used by pressure equipment manufacturers, material producers, stockists, notified/competent bodies, and inspectors to ensure material conformity and traceability under the PED.
  • Practical for fabrication and supply chains of pressure vessels, gas cylinders, piping, heat exchangers, and other unfired pressure equipment where documented material compliance is required.
  • Supports regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and quality assurance by defining what inspection documentation is acceptable for different material uses and equipment categories.

Related Standards

  • EN 764 series (Parts 1–4, 6–8) - Pressure equipment fundamentals and related procedures
  • EN 764-4:2014 - Establishment of technical delivery conditions for metallic materials
  • EN 10204 - Metallic products: Types of inspection documents

3 Requirements with respect to classification into pressure equipment categories
3.1 General
For material intended for use as pressure-bearing parts of pressure equipment of all categories and for
attachments (e.g. support feet, lifting lugs, baffles, pipe supports, stiffening rings) welded directly to pressure-
bearing parts of pressure equipment of all categories, the pressure equipment manufacturer shall ensure
compliance of these materials by obtaining from the material manufacturer a declaration of compliance, which is
traceable to the material, as specified in 3.2 to 3.5.
The issuing of any one of the inspection documents referred to in 3.2 to 3.5 is a declaration from the material
manufacturer that the delivered products are in compliance with the requirements of the specification and the order
(see EN 10204).
3.2 Material for main pressure-bearing parts of pressure equipment in category II, III and IV
For material intended for use as main pressure bearing parts of pressure equipment classified in categories II, III
and IV, a specific inspection and testing route according to Clause 4 or Clause 5 shall be followed. This shall be
either:
— by a material manufacturers Quality management system route (production under Quality management system
coverage) according to Clause 4; or
— by direct inspection route (production without Quality management system coverage) according to Clause 5.
3.3 Material for main pressure-bearing parts of pressure equipment in category I
For material intended for use as main pressure-bearing parts of pressure equipment classified in category I, at least
a test report, EN 10204 — “type 2.2”, shall be obtained from the material manufacturer.
3.4 Material for pressure-bearing parts not covered by 3.2 or 3.3 and for attachments to pres-
sure equipment in category II, III and IV
Pressure-bearing parts other than main pressure-bearing parts in categories I to IV and for attachments welded
directly to pressure-bearing parts of pressure equipment classified in categories II, III and IV at least a test report,
EN 10204 — “type 2.2” shall be obtained from the material manufacturer.
3.5 Other material
For materials for other parts not covered by 3.2 to 3.4 at least a declaration of compliance with the order, EN 10204
— “type 2.1” shall be obtained from the material manufacturer.
3.6 Welding consumables
For welding consumables for all categories of pressure equipment at least a test report EN 10204 — “type 2.2”
shall be obtained from the welding consumable manufacturer.
3.7 Use of higher document levels
An inspection document of a higher level is always acceptable.
