(Amendment)Railway applications - Electromagnetic compatibility - Part 3-2: Rolling stock - Apparatus
Railway applications - Electromagnetic compatibility - Part 3-2: Rolling stock - Apparatus
This European Standard applies to emission and immunity aspects of EMC for electrical and electronic apparatus intended for use on railway rolling stock. EN 50121-3-2 applies for the integration of apparatus on rolling stock.
The frequency range considered is from DC to 400 GHz. No measurements need to be performed at frequencies where no requirement is specified.
The application of tests shall depend on the particular apparatus, its configuration, its ports, its technology and its operating conditions.
This standard takes into account the internal environment of the railway rolling stock and the external environment of the railway, and interference to the apparatus from equipment such as hand-held radio-transmitters.
If a port is intended to transmit or receive for the purpose of radio communication (intentional radiators, e.g. transponder systems), then the radiated emission requirement in this standard is not intended to be applicable to the intentional transmission from a radio-transmitter as defined by the ITU.
Immunity limits do not apply in the exclusion bands as defined in the corresponding EMC related standard for radio equipment.
This standard does not apply to transient emissions when starting or stopping the apparatus.
The objective of this standard is to define limits and test methods for electromagnetic emissions and immunity test requirements in relation to conducted and radiated disturbances.
These limits and tests represent essential electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
Emission requirements have been selected so as to ensure that disturbances generated by the apparatus operated normally on railway rolling stock do not exceed a level which could prevent other apparatus from operating as intended. The emission limits given in this standard take precedence over emission requirements for individual apparatus on board the rolling stock given in other standards.
Likewise, the immunity requirements have been selected so as to ensure an adequate level of immunity for rolling stock apparatus.
The levels do not however cover all cases which may occur with an extremely low probability of occurrence in any location. Specific requirements which deviate from this standard shall be specified.
Test requirements are specified for each port considered.
These specific provisions are to be used in conjunction with the general provisions in EN 50121-1.

Overview
EN 50121-3-2:2016/A1:2019 (CENELEC) defines electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for electrical and electronic apparatus intended for use on railway rolling stock. The standard covers emission and immunity aspects for apparatus integration on trains, addressing conducted and radiated disturbances in the frequency range from DC to 400 GHz. It complements the general provisions of EN 50121-1 and supports conformity with EU Directive 2014/30/EU.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope of EMC: Applies to both emission and immunity of apparatus when installed on rolling stock; takes into account internal (onboard) and external (railway environment) interference sources, including handheld radio transmitters.
- Frequency range: Requirements cover DC to 400 GHz; no measurements are required for frequencies where no requirement is specified.
- Emission vs. intentional radiators: If a port is an intentional radio transmitter/receiver (e.g., transponder), the standard’s radiated emission requirement is not intended to apply to the intentional transmission as defined by ITU; immunity limits exclude bands defined by radio-equipment EMC standards.
- Test scope and configuration: Test application depends on the apparatus’ configuration, ports, technology and operating conditions; apparatus must be tested with the minimum auxiliary configuration necessary to exercise ports.
- Exclusions: Transient emissions at apparatus start/stop are not covered.
- Priority and deviations: Emission limits in EN 50121-3-2 take precedence over other onboard apparatus emission requirements; any specific deviations must be documented.
- Amendment A1 (2019): Updates include modifications to normative references, clarification on testing with auxiliary apparatus, and alignment of Annex ZZ with the European Commission standardisation request supporting Directive 2014/30/EU.

The SIST EN 50121-3-2:2017/A1:2019 standard addresses critical aspects of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) specifically for electrical and electronic apparatus used on railway rolling stock. This standard is pivotal in establishing emission and immunity requirements, thereby facilitating the reliable integration of such apparatus on rolling stock. The scope of this standard is comprehensive, covering a wide frequency range from DC up to 400 GHz, and it stipulates that measurements are only required at specific frequencies where EMC requirements are explicitly defined. By considering both the internal environment of rolling stock and external interferences-such as those from handheld radio transmitters-the standard ensures a thorough approach to mitigating potential disruptions. A key strength of the SIST EN 50121-3-2:2017/A1:2019 is its clear delineation of limits and test methods for electromagnetic disturbances. This framework is essential for maintaining the operational integrity of various apparatus aboard the rolling stock. The emission limits specified ensure that any disturbances generated do not interfere with the functionality of adjacent equipment, thereby prioritizing the operational reliability within the entire railway system. The differentiation between intentional radiators and other sources of emission is particularly noteworthy. The standard clarifies that the radiated emission requirements do not apply to intentional transmissions, indicating a nuanced understanding of the different roles radio communication apparatus play within the broader context of railway operations. Moreover, the detailed specification of test requirements for each port adds another layer of precision essential for compliance. While the immunity levels set forth provide an adequate threshold to ensure reliable operation, the standard also acknowledges the potential for rare cases outside of typical operational parameters. This pragmatic approach enhances its relevance, as it allows for specific deviations to be outlined as necessary by stakeholders, thus fostering flexibility in practical applications. In conclusion, the SIST EN 50121-3-2:2017/A1:2019 standard is instrumental in defining essential EMC requirements for railway rolling stock apparatus. It stands out for its thorough scope, well-defined limits, and test methodologies, reinforcing its relevance in promoting safety, reliability, and operational harmony within the railway sector.
