(Main)Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 10: Compactability
- Abstract
This document describes three test methods for characterizing the compactability of a bituminous mixture, by the relation between its density or void content and the compaction energy applied to it, using an impact (Marshall) compactor, gyratory compactor, or a vibratory compactor.
This document applies to bituminous mixtures, both those prepared in laboratory and those resulting sampled from plant produced mixtures. The results of the test method serve to supplement the results of mixture design.

oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025 is the Slovenian standard identical to CEN prEN 12697-10, issued by SIST. It specifies three test methods for characterizing the compactability of bituminous mixtures by relating density or void content to applied compaction energy, using impact (Marshall), gyratory, or vibratory compaction. The results are used to supplement mixture design for laboratory-prepared mixtures and samples taken from plant-produced mixtures.
What does oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025 specify?
oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025 specifies how to assess compactability of bituminous mixtures and how to report the resulting parameters. The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, principle, apparatus, test procedure, calculation and expression of results, test report, and precision.
The scope covers both laboratory-made mixtures and mixtures sampled from production. In practice, that means the same standard can be used for mix design work and for checking material coming from an asphalt plant.
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025?
Test principle
Clause 4 lets the user choose one of three compaction methods - impact, gyratory, or vibratory - and one of two monitoring approaches. The mixture can be tested with several specimens at increasing compaction energy, or with one specimen while its thickness changes during compaction are measured. This matters because the test setup determines which parameter is calculated and how the result is interpreted.
The compaction energy is expressed differently depending on the method: blows for impact, gyrations for gyratory, and seconds for vibratory compaction. That keeps the data tied to the actual machine action used in the test.
Test procedures
Clause 6.1.1 uses Marshall specimens compacted with 5, 15, 25, 35, 50 and 100 blows on each side, then bulk density is determined. Clause 6.1.2 uses one Marshall specimen compacted with 100 blows on each side and records thickness after each blow, followed by four final thickness measurements after cooling.
Clause 6.2 requires gyratory compaction with at least 200 gyrations and at least three specimens per mixture. Bulk density, maximum density and void content are then used to calculate compactability. For a laboratory, this means the procedure needs enough replicates to give a stable average.
Clause 6.3 covers vibratory compaction using duplicate specimens at 10, 15, 20, 30, 60 and 120 s per side. If no density increase occurs after 60 s, testing may stop at 60 s, but the full set of specimens is still kept. This gives a practical limit for mixtures that reach refusal early.
Calculation, reporting and precision
Clause 7 turns the measured data into regression parameters that describe compactability or compaction resistance. Impact compaction uses density or thickness relationships, gyratory compaction uses void content versus gyrations, and vibratory compaction uses void content change versus time. The fitted parameter is the number that users compare between mixtures.
Clause 8 requires the report to identify the method of mixing, the compaction method used, the compaction temperature, the key gyratory settings where relevant, the calculated parameters, the result plot, any deviations, and any unusual observations. In practice, this is the minimum record needed to compare tests or defend a result.
Clause 9 gives repeatability and reproducibility information for impact and gyratory compaction. For vibratory compaction, the precision is still tentative. That tells users how much confidence to place in the result and whether a method is mature enough for routine control.
What terms does oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025 define?
- Compactability (K, k) - the ability of an asphalt mixture to be compacted; higher values mean less energy is needed to reach a given void content reduction.
- K - the compactability parameter used when compactability is evaluated by gyratory compaction.
- k - the compactability parameter used when compactability is evaluated by vibratory compaction.
- Compaction resistance (C, T) - the resistance of an asphalt mixture to being compacted; higher values mean more energy is needed for the same reduction in void content.
- C - the compaction resistance parameter used for impact compaction with several specimens at different energies.
- T - the compaction resistance parameter used for impact compaction with one specimen while thickness is measured.
Who uses oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025?
oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025 is used by laboratories, mix design engineers, road materials specialists, and quality control staff working with bituminous mixtures. It is relevant for both plant production control and laboratory development of asphalt mixtures. Buyers and specification writers can also use it to define how compactability is to be checked.
What changed in oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025 from the previous edition?
oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025 supersedes EN 12697-10:2017. The foreword lists these main changes:
- the paragraph about applicability in product standards was deleted;
- the titles for the test methods were corrected by removing “for hot mix asphalt”;
- the tolerance for one measuring device in 5.1.2 was amended;
- the slide calliper rule requirement in 5.1.3 was amended;
- clause 6.1.2 was clarified;
- the information required in the test report in clause 8 was updated.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025?
- EN 12697-5 - provides the maximum density used in gyratory and vibratory evaluations.
- EN 12697-6 - provides the bulk density method used for impact and vibratory specimens.
- EN 12697-8 - provides the void characteristics method used to calculate void content.
- EN 12697-30 - covers specimen preparation by impact compactor.
- EN 12697-31 - covers specimen preparation by gyratory compactor.
- EN 12697-32 - covers laboratory compaction by vibratory compactor.
What does the oSIST prEN 12697-10:2025 document contain?
The document contains one scope, one principle section, three compaction-specific test procedures, and corresponding calculation formulas for impact, gyratory, and vibratory methods. It also includes tables for method selection, permissible variation, and precision, plus example figures showing regression fitting for impact compaction. For users, the most practical parts are the procedure clauses, the calculation formulas, and the test report requirements, because those define how the test is run and how the result is documented.

3.1
compactability
K, k
ability of an asphalt mixture to be compacted (K when evaluated by gyratory compaction and k when
evaluated by vibratory compaction)

3.2
compaction resistance
C, T
resistance of an asphalt mixture to being compacted (C when evaluated by impact compaction of several
specimens with varied compaction energy and T when evaluated by impact compaction of one specimen
while measuring its thickness)
Note 1 to entry: High values of C and T will indicate a mixture for which high compaction energy is required to
obtain a given void content decrease.
4 Principle
The bituminous mixture is compacted at a prescribed temperature with varying compaction energies
using one of three optional types of compaction methods:
a) impact compaction
b) gyratory compaction
c) vibratory compaction.
Two methods of monitoring the compactability can be applied:
— Method 1: two or more specimen are compacted with different amounts of compaction energy and
their densities are measured.
— Method 2: one specimen is used and its increase in density during the compaction process is
determined from its decrease in thickness.
The following Table 1 defines the compaction type to use depending of the compactness of tracking
method and gives the clause of test procedure.

A graph is drawn of density (or voids content) against compaction energy. When the impact compaction
is used, the compaction energy is characterized by the number of blows, when the gyratory compaction
is used, by the number of gyrations and when the vibratory compactor is used, by the duration in seconds.
A mathematical formula is derived from the experimental results, the parameters of which formula
characterize the compactability of the bituminous mixture.
