Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures - Test methods - Determination of thermal compatibility - Part 2: Thunder-shower cycling (thermal shock)
This standard is the second in a series of five parts to assess the thermal compatibility of repair products and systems, comprising grouts, mortars and concretes and surface protection systems, used for the repair and protection of concrete structures. The method measures the effect of shock cooling (thunder-shower) from an elevated temperature. The method is suitable for repair products and systems based on CC, PCC and PC binders and for surface protection systems.

Overview
SIST EN 13687-2:2002 (CEN) defines a laboratory test method to evaluate the thermal compatibility of products and systems used for the protection and repair of concrete structures. The method reproduces a thunder-shower thermal shock: specimens are heated to an elevated surface temperature and then rapidly doused with cold water to measure the effect of shock cooling. The test is applicable to grouts, mortars and concretes based on CC, PCC and PC binders and to surface protection systems.
Key practical points:
- A layer of the repair product is applied to a reference concrete specimen prepared to EN 1766 procedures.
- Test cycling alternates radiant heating to about 60 °C and dousing with water at about 12 °C.
- The standard test cycle is six hours (5 h 45 min heat, 15 min dousing) and is repeated per the number of cycles specified for the product type.
- Bond strength is assessed after cycling by pull-off testing to EN 1542 and visual defects are recorded.
Key Topics
- Purpose: Determine how repair materials and protective coatings tolerate rapid cooling from elevated temperatures (thermal shock).
- Specimens: Three concrete test specimens per test (two cycled, one reference) prepared and cured according to the standard and Annex A requirements.
- Thermal cycle: Radiant heating followed by a controlled water dousing; temperature difference between heat and water is specified to simulate thunder-shower conditions.
- Evaluation: Visual inspection for cracking, scaling, peeling, blistering and delamination; measurement of adhesion loss with pull-off test; report of mean values, standard deviations and fracture types.
- Laboratory climate and curing: Conditioning and curing regimes are defined (standard laboratory climate, wet conditioning or specific curing depending on binder type).
Applications
This standard is intended for:
- Manufacturers validating thermal compatibility of repair grouts, mortars and concretes prior to market release.
- Specifiers and contractors selecting suitable surface protection systems and repair materials for bridges, tunnels, building facades and other concrete infrastructure exposed to rapid temperature changes.
- Test laboratories performing conformity and comparative performance testing as part of product certification and quality control.
Benefits for users:
- Provides a repeatable, standardized way to simulate thermal shock and assess durability risk.
- Links visual damage assessment with quantitative adhesion testing (EN 1542) for robust evaluation.
Related Standards
- EN 1766 - reference concretes for testing
- EN 1542 - measurement of bond strength by pull-off
- EN 13687-1, -3, -4, -5 - related thermal compatibility test methods
- EN 1504 series - definitions and requirements for products and systems for protection and repair of concrete
For procurement, conformity assessment or material selection, SIST EN 13687-2:2002 should be referenced alongside EN 1504 product requirements and the appropriate regional/national implementation of CEN standards.
