Adhesives - Determination of pH

This European Standard specifies a method for the determination by electrometry of the pH of adhesives, their basic constituents and related products using a pH meter equipped with a glass and silver reference combined electrode.
This standard is applicable to products supplied in an aqueous medium, and of known concentration, and to products which can be dissolved, dispersed or suspended in water. It is not applicable to adhesives that react with water.
NOTE   The accuracy of the method decreases at pH values above 11.

Ta evropski standard določa metodo določevanja pH lepil, njihovih osnovnih sestavin in sorodnih proizvodov z elektrometrijo s pH-metrom, opremljenim s stekleno in srebrno referenčno kombinirano elektrodo.

Overview

SIST EN 1245:2011 is a European Standard established by CEN, detailing a precise method for determining the pH of adhesives and related products using electrometry. This standard specifies the use of a pH meter equipped with a combined glass and silver reference electrode to measure the pH of adhesives supplied in an aqueous medium or those that can be dissolved, dispersed, or suspended in water. It excludes adhesives that chemically react with water. Accurate pH measurement is crucial for quality control and ensuring adhesive performance in industrial applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope & Applicability: Applies to adhesives with known concentration in aqueous media and related constituents but not to adhesives reactive with water.
  • Measurement Principle: Electrochemical determination of pH by measuring potential difference between a glass electrode and a silver reference electrode in the sample.
  • Electrodes & Equipment: Use of combined glass and silver/silver chloride electrodes with a high input impedance pH meter (≥10¹² Ω) and temperature compensation.
  • Calibration: Calibration at two points using buffer solutions at pH 7 and either pH 4 or pH 9 to ensure meter accuracy.
  • Sample Preparation: Homogenization of samples; solid or highly viscous adhesives are diluted or dispersed 1:1 with water when necessary.
  • Test Conditions: Temperature control and equilibration of electrodes, buffers, and samples near 23 °C to reduce measurement errors.
  • Accuracy Considerations: Method accuracy declines at pH values above 11 due to alkaline error from electrode limitations.
  • Reagents: Use of deionized or distilled water (EN ISO 3696 compliant) and specifically prepared or commercially available buffer solutions.
  • Result Reporting: pH values rounded to nearest 0.1 unit and reported with test temperature and relevant sample details.

Applications

The SIST EN 1245:2011 standard is vital for industries and laboratories involved in manufacturing, testing, and quality control of adhesives. Practical applications include:

  • Adhesive Formulation: Monitoring pH to ensure chemical stability and performance during production.
  • Quality Assurance: Verifying adhesive batches meet pH specifications critical for bonding effectiveness and safety.
  • Compliance Testing: Ensuring products conform to European regulations and standards related to adhesive chemistry.
  • Product Development: Supporting research for developing water-compatible adhesives with controlled pH characteristics.
  • Environmental and Safety Monitoring: Managing waste disposal of adhesive samples and reagents following local environmental guidelines.

By adhering to SIST EN 1245:2011, manufacturers and testing laboratories maintain consistent and reliable pH measurement practices that directly impact product quality and regulatory compliance.
