4.1 This specification sets the maximum permissible cashmere coarse-hair content for cashmere in the form of roving, yarn, or fabric.
4.2 When agreed upon by parties in interest, this specification provides a basis for acceptance testing of roving, yarn, or fabric of cashmere, or blends of cashmere and other fibers in such products.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the allowable cashmere coarse-hair content in cashmere which has been processed at least to the roving stage.
1.2 For blends of cashmere hair and other fibers, this specification is applicable only to the cashmere hair content of such blends.
Note 1: For the determination of the cashmere coarse-hair content in cashmere, refer to Test Method D2816. For the identification of textile fibers see Methods D276. For the quantitative determination of the composition of textile blends, see Test Methods D629.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Overview
ASTM D2817-18: Standard Specification for Maximum Cashmere Coarse-Hair Content in Cashmere is an internationally recognized textile standard developed by ASTM International. This specification defines the permissible maximum level of coarse hair in cashmere across different processed forms, such as roving, yarn, or fabric. The standard provides a clear methodology for testing and acceptance of cashmere quality, ensuring product consistency and supporting fair trade in the global cashmere market.
Key Topics
- Maximum Coarse-Hair Content: The standard sets a strict threshold for the allowable coarse-hair content in cashmere products. For cashmere in the form of roving, yarn, or fabric, the coarse-hair content must not exceed 0.7% by length.
- Quality Assurance: The specification forms the basis for acceptance testing of cashmere and its blends, supporting contractual agreements and quality control in production.
- Applicability to Blends: For blended textiles containing cashmere and other fibers, this standard applies specifically to the cashmere content portion.
- Standardized Testing Procedure: A single approved test according to ASTM methods suffices for determination. In disputes, further tests may be conducted using different samples, with decisions based on majority results.
- Reference Methods:
- Test Method D2816: For determination of coarse-hair content in cashmere.
- Methods D276: For fiber identification.
- Test Methods D629: For quantitative analysis of textile blends.
Applications
ASTM D2817-18 maximizes value for a wide range of stakeholders in the textile supply chain:
- Manufacturers and Processors: Provides a benchmark for product quality, helping to maintain the premium reputation of cashmere goods.
- Buyers and Traders: Assists in confirming cashmere quality, enabling informed sourcing decisions and contract compliance.
- Testing Laboratories: Offers standardized procedures for rapid and reproducible assessment of cashmere quality, increasing confidence in test results.
- Blending Operations: Ensures that in textiles blending cashmere with other fibers, the cashmere component meets stringent quality standards.
- Retailers and Brands: Supports marketing claims regarding product purity and compliance with international quality requirements.
- Regulatory and Trade Bodies: Establishes a basis for harmonized quality across borders, consistent with WTO Technical Barriers to Trade principles.
Benefits in Practice
- Protects consumers and brands from inferior or adulterated cashmere products.
- Simplifies dispute resolution with clear testing protocols.
- Enhances global competitiveness and credibility of cashmere products through adherence to international standards.
Related Standards
ASTM D2817-18 references and is supported by several additional ASTM standards critical for textile testing and quality assurance:
- ASTM D2816: Test Method for Cashmere Coarse-Hair Content in Cashmere (provides the test procedure referenced in D2817)
- ASTM D276: Test Methods for Identification of Fibers in Textiles (essential for fiber analysis)
- ASTM D629: Test Methods for Quantitative Analysis of Textiles (for analyzing blend compositions)
- ASTM D123: Terminology Relating to Textiles (foundational terminology resource)
- ASTM D4845: Terminology Relating to Wool and Wool Felt (specific terminology for related animal fibers)
Adhering to ASTM D2817-18 supports compliance with recognized international trade and quality principles for cashmere, benefiting producers, brands, and consumers alike and strengthening the integrity of the global textile industry.
