Overview
ASTM F1072-94(2023), Standard Specification for Expanded-Metal Doors, provides requirements for the design, materials, and construction of steel expanded-metal doors. These doors are primarily intended for use in expanded-metal bulkheads, structural bulkheads, and structural arches. The standard outlines four specific types of door orientation and construction, ensuring a precise fit and functionality in industrial and marine environments.
Complying with ASTM F1072-94(2023) ensures that expanded-metal doors meet safety, durability, and installation standards recognized globally. Developed by ASTM Committee F25 on Ships and Marine Technology, this specification supports quality and safety in highly demanding installations.
Key Topics
Door Types:
The standard specifies four types of expanded-metal doors to accommodate different installation needs:- Type I: Right hand (RH)
- Type II: Left hand (LH)
- Type III: Right hand reverse (RHR)
- Type IV: Left hand reverse (LHR)
Materials & Construction:
- Steel frames constructed to ASTM A36/A36M requirements
- Stainless steel components (where applicable) in line with ASTM A167 (withdrawn)
- Expanded-metal panels of 13-gauge steel per A36/A36M
- Structural integrity ensured by vertical support channels, top angle, and a temporary brace to prevent racking
- Swaged butt hinges and required bracing per specifications
Workmanship & Safety:
- All doors and frames must be free from cracks, burrs, sharp edges, and other defects
- Finished assemblies are coated with a nonhazardous corrosion-inhibiting primer
- Design includes rubber-tipped bumpers and manually operated catches to secure doors in the open position
Hardware Provision:
- Accommodation for rim latch sets operated by knobs on both sides
- Padlocks and hardware to be supplied and installed by others
Packaging & Marking:
- Doors individually packaged to ASTM D3951 standards
- Marked for clear identification according to commercial packaging guidelines
Applications
Expanded-metal doors manufactured to ASTM F1072-94(2023) are used in a variety of robust and safety-critical settings, including:
Marine and Shipbuilding:
Ideal for installation in expanded-metal and structural bulkheads found on ships, offshore platforms, and related marine structures where lightweight yet durable access solutions are needed.Industrial Facilities:
Utilized in manufacturing plants, processing facilities, and structural environments requiring secure access through bulkheads or arches.Safety and Security:
The inclusion of secure latch provisions and optional padlock features make these doors suitable for environments where controlled access and safety are top priorities.
