Overview
ASTM F1071-94(2023): Standard Specification for Expanded-Metal Bulkhead Panels is an internationally recognized standard developed by ASTM International. This specification details requirements for steel expanded-metal bulkhead panels commonly used in storerooms, industrial shops, and as protective barriers against personnel hazards. The standard sets forth classifications, material properties, manufacturing practices, quality criteria, and packaging expectations to ensure performance and safety in a range of industrial environments.
Key Topics
Types and Classes:
- Type I: Universal bulkhead panels (usable as both right-hand or left-hand panels)
- Type II: Right-hand bulkhead panels
- Type III: Left-hand bulkhead panels
Panel Classes and Sizes:
- Class A: 2 ft (610 mm) bulkhead panels
- Class B: 3 ft (915 mm) bulkhead panels
- Panels are further classified by height, including sizes of 76 in. (195 cm), 64 in. (165 cm), and 40 in. (100 cm)
Material and Fabrication:
- Steel components complying with ASTM A36/A36M for structural integrity
- All welding performed per recognized codes such as AWS D1.1 or ABS steel vessel rules
- Strict tolerances and free from cracks, burrs, and sharp edges
Corrosion Protection:
- Panels receive a nonhazardous corrosion-inhibiting primer coating to ensure durability during service
Packaging and Marking:
- Each expanded-metal bulkhead panel shall be individually packaged according to ASTM D3951 practices for commercial packaging
- Markings must meet contract requirements and ASTM D3951 specifications
Applications
Expanded-metal bulkhead panels specified by ASTM F1071-94(2023) provide robust and practical solutions for:
- Storerooms and Inventory Spaces:
Control access, partition storage areas, and improve organization - Shops and Workshops:
Enhance safety by segregating hazardous machinery or materials from personnel movement zones - Personnel Protection:
Serve as physical barriers to prevent accidental access to hazardous areas or equipment - Industrial Facilities and Marine Environments:
Used as modular partitions or protective barriers, especially where quick installation and high durability are required - Compliance and Safety Assurance:
Meet occupational health and safety requirements for barriers and enclosures in a variety of industrial and maritime applications
Related Standards
Several international and national standards intersect with ASTM F1071-94(2023), providing a comprehensive framework for material, fabrication, and packaging:
- ASTM A36/A36M: Specification for Carbon Structural Steel
- AWS D1.1: Structural Welding Code for Steel
- ABS Rules: Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels (American Bureau of Shipping)
- ASTM D3951: Practice for Commercial Packaging
Using ASTM F1071-94(2023) ensures expanded-metal bulkhead panels are manufactured and installed to consistent benchmarks for quality, safety, and reliability. This standard is critical for facility managers, safety officers, procurement specialists, and contractors seeking to maintain compliance and improve safety in storerooms, workshops, and industrial environments.
