Overview
EN 16210:2013 (CEN) defines how to document and acquire measurements of transportation loads, focusing on climatic and other environmental stresses (e.g., sunlight, sand, dust, salt fog, electromagnetic radiation) that goods experience during transport, handling and storage. The standard specifies required data acquisition, what must be recorded in a measuring report, and general requirements for measuring equipment used to capture unbiased raw load-time data.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Measurement and documentation of climatic and other loads during transport, handling and storage (road, rail, sea, in‑plant and combined transport; air transport annex to be developed).
- Terms and definitions: Clear definitions such as data acquisition and measuring equipment (sensor, signal conditioner, data recorder and data storage).
- Measurement principles:
- Place sensors in the cargo compartment as close as possible to the goods and document the exact measuring points.
- Record source data in an unbiased form (raw load-time functions) so data can be re-used and re-analysed.
- Use measuring systems compliant with the technical state of the art, calibration rules and the measuring task.
- Planning and preparation:
- Define intended use of data, number and type of sensors, measuring ranges and intervals, spatial distribution of measuring points, measurement duration and route selection.
- Identify and estimate possible error sources to reduce repeat test runs and cost.
- Measuring report:
- Complete documentation of all relevant circumstances and technical parameters is mandatory. Annexes provide blank measuring report forms tailored to each transport mode (Annex A: road; B: in‑plant; C: rail; D: sea; E: combined; F: air - to be developed).
- Derivations or deviations from the report must be justified to preserve traceability.
Applications and users
EN 16210:2013 is practical for professionals who need reliable, standardised transport load data to design, test or validate packaging and logistics solutions:
- Packaging engineers and manufacturers - to size and qualify packaging against real-world climatic stresses and help meet Directive 94/62/EC objectives (avoidance/reduction of packaging waste).
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - for standardised measurement protocols and reporting.
- Logistics planners, shippers and carriers - to document environmental exposures during transport and improve risk assessment for sensitive goods (electronics, pharmaceuticals, perishable products).
- Standards developers and researchers - to collect comparable datasets of transport loads for statistical analysis.
Related standards
- EN 16210 integrates with packaging and transport testing practices; users should consider other CEN/ISO standards on packaging tests, environmental testing and calibration guidance when implementing measuring equipment and interpreting results.

At present, basic standards which describe and characterise in adequate form the magnitude of the transportation loads, based on scientifically confirmed values do not exist in the national and international world of standards. The reasons for this are mainly the absence of published data, insufficient description of the measurements, or restrictions on the dissemination of this information. With this document, it will be possible to measure and analyse climatic and other transportation loads, thus allowing standardised and adequately documented load values to be produced. A.4.1.1 Location of the sensors (see Figure A.1) The sensors should preferably be mounted in three planes in order to capture the temperature spatially. Furthermore, it is advantageous to mount the sensors in such a way that they do not obstruct loading and unloading. For that reason, the measurements should preferably be performed with automatic recording devices.
